REDLANDS, Calif. -
Brandon Borso scored five goals and the Tritons raced to a 4-1 first-quarter lead and never looked back as top-seeded UC San Diego defeated No.5 UC Davis 13-5 in the second semifinal at the 2003 Western Water Polo Association Men's Championships Friday evening at the Thompson Aquatics Center.
With the loss the Aggies see their season record fall to 14-15 and will now face Air Force in the third-place game Saturday afternoon.
UC San Diego, ranked No.7 nationally entering the tournament, came out strong, racing to a 4-1 lead after the first period and 7-1 by halftime. The Tritons would increase the lead to 10-1 after three periods before UC Davis battled back in the fourth, outscoring UC San Diego 4-3 in the final period to make the final score 13-5.
In addition to Borso's game-high five goals, the Tritons received four goals from Jonathan Hopkins while Matt Ustazewski added three. The Tritons took advantage of four UC Davis penalties, converting all four 6-on-5 chances into goals while UC Davis went scoreless in their 6-on-5 opportunities, going 0-3 on the contest.
UC Davis was led by freshman David Welch, who scored two goals, while seniors George Dingeldein and Jamie Turpen, along with sophomore Aaron Schelegle each added one goal on the night. Zach Wordes made three saves in goal for UC Davis.
UC Davis will now face Air Force in the third-place game on Saturday. The Aggies dropped their only contest of the year with the Cadets, 12-5, in late September. Gametime is set for 3:30 p.m.
