LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC Davis split its two matches on Friday, dropping a 7-5 decision No.3-seed BYU-Hawaii in its opening contest then rebounding in the afternoon to defeat Redlands, 7-4, following the first day of play at the Western Water Polo Association Championships Friday afternoon at UC San Diego's Canyonview Pool.
With the split, UC Davis sees its record move to 18-12 on the season and it will conclude the 2002 season on Saturday with a fifth-place match against LaVerne at 1:30 p.m. UC Davis has finished fifth at each of the last two WWPA championships.
UC Davis, seeded No.6 in the tournament, had its chances against BYU-Hawaii late in the game as Brook Rogers scored with four minutes left to cut the lead to 7-5. But neither team could generate any more offense as that would be the final score.
The Aggies executed their game plan, holding BYU's two top players to just one goal between them. But it was offensively where UC Davis struggled The Aggies had 10 six-on-five opportunities and came away with just one goal.
"That was the difference in the contest," said Aggie Head Coach Steve Doten. "We executed well on defense and played hard all game, we just didn't convert on many of our six-on-five opportunities. That was clearly the difference."
Rogers led the way with a pair of goals against the Seasiders, while George Dingeldein, Tom Jay and Patrick Jacobson all scored in the contest. Zach Wordes recorded 12 saves in the cage for the Aggies.
UC Davis rebounded in the afternoon match as it defeated Redlands by a score of 7-4. Dingeldein scored four goals to lead the Aggies, with Jamie Turpen, Jonathan Burke and Brian Combs all adding a goal. Wordes made five saves in net for UC Davis.
