DAVIS, Calif. - - Steve Doten will step aside as UC Davis head men's water polo coach and will pursue other professional opportunities, it was announced Thursday by Terry Tumey, Director of Athletics.

"I've always felt that coaching is a privilege and I'm happy to have had that privilege here at UC Davis," Doten said. "When I came to campus in 2001, the head coaching job was part-time, we played in Hickey Pool and the department was Div. II. I feel good about helping the position evolve to full-time lecturer-coach, as well as helping in the transition to Div. I. I feel good about the evolution of the program.

"I look forward to the opportunity to spend more time with my family, particularly being more involved with my three wonderful children as they are growing up so quickly," he added.

Doten led UC Davis to 192-168 overall record and a 126-54 mark in the Western Water Polo Association during his 12 seasons. His teams also earned shares of the 2007 and 2008 Lysle Leach Team Academic Awards, given to the UC Davis men's teams with the highest GPA's.

"We appreciate Steve's contributions to our program and wish him the best in the future," Tumey said.

Tumey added plans for a national search for a new head coach will be formulated soon.
