TO RECAP: After falling to second-ranked California in the morning contest, No. 13 UC Davis (0-2) put up a valiant effort against No. 5 Pacific in the afternoon game in Saturday's Golden Bear Invitational... The Aggies led 3-2 at halftime and 6-5 with six minutes remaining in the fourth before Tiger center Goran Tomasevic scored in the final seconds to capture the victory... Senior center Aaron Salit scored four goals in each contest, while four other players each contributed one... Had UC Davis pulled off the win, it would have been the program's first victory over a top-five team since October 27, 2006 when the No. 13 Aggies upset No. 5 UC San Diego in a home WWPA tilt... Nonetheless, UC Davis moved up two spots to No. 11 in Wednesday's national Top 20.
UP NEXT: UC Davis heads south to compete in the double-host Inland Empire Classic, but not before stopping in for a game at Fresno Pacific on Friday... The tournament field consists of most SCIAC members who also compete in the WWPA... Redlands and Pomona-Pitzer each received a vote in the 2011 preseason top 20, Redlands kept a vote in the Sept. 7 poll.
FRESNO PACIFIC (0-5) lost all of its contests at the tough UCI Invitational, but gave chase to Division III power Redlands... The Sunbirds held a 7-6 lead in the fourth before surrendering two unanswered... Senior driver Nick Fadden scored four in the loss... WHITTIER finished 13-21 in 2010 but return All-Americans Erick Gonzalez and Chad Evenrud... Gonzalez scored 66 goals with 25 steals and 39 assists as a freshman last year, while Evenrud posted 387 saves...
REDLANDS (1-4) dropped four straight at the hands of nationally ranked opposition to start the UCI Invitational before claiming the 8-7 victory over FPU... Seniors Blake vanHartesvelt and Jeff Parsons each scored five for the tournament... The Bulldogs went 20-16 last year, placing sixth at the WWPA tournament... LA VERNE (0-4) lost four straight at the UCLA Invitational, surrendering 70 goals to UC Santa Barbara, UCLA, Air Force and Cal Lutheran... Senior utility Brandon Gross led the Kingsmen with 10 goals in Sunday's portion of the tournament... POMONA-PITZER (0-2) played only the first day at the UCLA Invite, falling to Pepperdine and UC Santa Barbara by a 31-8 combined score... Junior center Jason Cox accounted for exactly half of the Sagehens' eight goals.
HEAD COACH STEVE DOTEN:
"We tried a new type of zone defense. We've talked about making our defense more dynamic. It's something that other people do it, per se. It's a style that I thought might benefit us more. It's a derivative of a more basic zone. We made an adjustment and ran it according to our personnel, and it worked well. We ran a combination of our two zones, which we need to be able to do."
"The word is `motivating.' The guys definitely had the mindset that they wanted to win the game. They're not satisfied with the loss. The mindset is that we want to play well and do what we talk about in the game. It's a team concept, not a bunch of guys making things up. I thought the discipline in that regard was good. They worked on what we've talked about and implemented the game plan."
"We need to continue playing a lot of bodies and getting people some reps. That's what this weekend will do. It's a weekend trip, it's five games on the road. The SCIAC is part of the WWPA, so it's an important weekend. I think the guys are motivated after the games last weekend. The loss keeps them hungry and working hard, but they did well in the things we've talked about, so that keeps them in the right frame of mind."
