Virginia Duals Results

HAMPTON, Va.- Despite winning half of the matches in the dual, the UC Davis wrestling team came up one point short in their second match of the Virginia Duals Friday afternoon, falling to Columbia 17-16 at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Va. The Aggies lost earlier in the day to North Carolina 24-12 which resulted in their placement in the consolation bracket.

The Ags got off to a rough start against Columbia when both Marcos Orozco and Omar Gaitan lost their matches in a two-point decision, followed by an 11-0 major decision loss by Nexi Delgado in the 141-pound bracket. Things began to take a turn for the better for UC Davis as Jeff Bristol (149) defeated Columbia's Derek Sickles in a 7-3 decision followed by an 8-7 decision over Tyler Thurgood by Jon Clark in the 157-pound division.

The UC Davis comeback was stifled when Frank Richmond (165) lost a tight 9-8 decision to Dustin Tillman. Ken Cook helped the Ags regain momentum in the 174-pound match-up as he defeated Kenji Porter in a 12-3 major decision and also became the only Aggie to win both of his matches Friday. Tyler Bernacchi also captured a narrow win in the third match of the dual decided by a single point, with a 7-6 decision over Justin Barent.

With the dual tied at 13-13, Columbia's Orrin Kleinhenz took a 13-5 major decision over Eliot Kelly to put the Lions ahead 17-13. Evan Hendrix managed a tight 4-3 win over John Grando in the heavyweight division, but it was not enough to capture the dual win for the Ags as they fell 16-17 to the Lions.

Earlier in the day the Aggies fell to North Carolina, 12-24 after winning only three matches within the dual. Gaitan won the first match for the Ags with a 13-6 decision over Evan Sola. Gaitan's win was followed by Frank Richmond's impressive win by fall over No. 20 ranked Garrett Atkinson 53 seconds into the 165-pound match-up. No. 13 Cook captured his first win of the day in a 16-9 decision over Alex Maciag. Cook has won the last seven consecutive matches he has wrestled and currently has an overall season record of 17-4.

Following Friday's losses, UC Davis currently holds a dual record of 2-5.
