Aggie Wrestlers Rally For 23-13 Win Over Gators

CONCORD, Calif. - UC Davis won the final four matches against San Francisco State on Friday night, rallying from a seven-point deficit, beating the Gators 23-13 in a nonconference wrestling match contested at the Concord Youth Center.

UC Davis, which won for the second straight time, evened its dual mark at 5-5. San Francisco State, ranked 20th in NCAA Division II, dropped to 2-9.

The Gators led the Aggies 13-6 after Luke Santos scored a 14-6 major decision at 149 pounds against the Aggies' Shawn Haratani. However, UC Davis turned the tide at 157 when 14th-ranked Jeremiah Jarvis recorded his sixth pin of the season, recording a fall in 5 minutes, 44 seconds against Cleveland Berto and bringing the Aggies to within 13-12.

Michael Font followed with a 13-3 major decision over Buck Meredith at 165 that put UC Davis up 16-13 while Frank Richmond's 3-0 win over Danny Dahl at 174 clinched at least a tie in the team score. Brandon Bear won for the ninth straight time at 184 with a 15-2 major decision against Asa Randolph to clinch the victory.

The Aggies opened the match by splitting the first four bouts with the Gators. Ronnie Silva won 3-2 over Chris Bostick at 197 for an early 3-0 lead by UC Davis but Daren Murphy evened the match with a 5-3 decision at heavyweight against Michael Clarkston. Tommy Schurkamp then edged Joey Bareng 5-4 at 125 to put the Aggies back in front 6-3 before wins by Donald Lockett (133) and Pacifico Garcia (141) set up Santos' win at 149 and the Gators' 13-6 lead.

UC Davis returns to action on Jan. 31 at the All-California Tournament at San Francisco State.
