SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Despite having only four regular starters in its lineup, the UC Davis wrestling team picked up a pair of wins Friday afternoon as the Aggies beat Central Washington, 35-12, and host San Francisco State, 24-19, in collegiate duals.
The Aggies, who were led by senior Urijah Faber's two pins at 133 pounds, won for the third straight time, improving to 6-4 overall. The Wildcats dropped to 3-2 while the host Gators - ranked fifth in NCAA Division II - fell to 5-6.
Faber, Tommy Schurkamp (125), Ronnie Silva (184) and Jason Paul (285) were the only Aggie starters healthy enough to wrestle on Friday, but UC Davis still had enough firepower to down its two Division II opponents.
Faber pinned Central Washington's Ross Kondo in 2 minutes, 50 seconds in his first bout Friday afternoon, one of two pins for the Aggies against the Wildcats. Frank Richmond - filling in for the injured Michael Font at 165 pounds - recorded the other, pinning Matt Lininger in 4:25.
UC Davis won two matches against Central Washington by forfeit while also receiving major-decision victories from Silva and Paul. Silva downed Franco Santiago, 18-6, while Paul beat Luke Roberts, 10-2. Mike Andersen (141) earned a 5-1 decision against Brandon Nall, while Tommy Shurkamp (125) and Dan Schon (174) each won by forfeit.
Faber had one of two pins for UC Davis in the Aggies' second match as well, beating San Francisco State's Donald Lockett in 3:31. Faber improved to a team-best 23-7 with his second win of the day and his eighth pin this season.
Kevin Jones had UC Davis' other win by fall against San Francisco State, downing Jarred Waller in 3:58. In addition to the two falls, the Aggies got a technical fall (14-2) from Richmond against Cleveland Berton and a major decision (12-2) by Paul over Chris Bostick.
Schon had the Aggies' other win, a 3-1 decision over Michael Cordsen. UC Davis forfeited both its matches at 197 pounds.
The Aggies return to action next week, hosting Cal Poly on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Fresno State on Friday at 6 p.m.
