SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Junior Michael Clarkston lost his opening-round match in the 197-pound weight class at the California Collegiate Wrestling Invitational at San Francisco State on Saturday, but rebounded to earn third place and highlight UC Davis' day at the tournament.

UC Davis, which sent a limited squad to the invitational, scored 9.0 points in the one-day event, finishing 14th. Cal State Bakersfield scored 122 points to win the tournament title. Cesar Correa also finished well for the Aggies, advancing to the 133-pound semifinals before taking fourth.

Clarkston, who has been wrestling up a class at heavyweight in recent duals for the Aggies, moved back to his normal 197-pound class for Saturday's event. After losing to Matt Monteiro of Cal State Bakersfield by technical fall, Clarkston rallied to win a decision over Larry Ozowara of Stanford, a pin against teammate Dan Schon and then a 6-2 decision of Embry-Riddle's Robert Charleton for the Aggies' highest finish of the day.

Correa had championship bracket wins against Alvaro Arreola of Cal St. Fullerton and Donald Lockett of San Francisco State before being defeated 8-3 by eventual champion Matt Sanchez of Bakersfield. Correa then advanced to the third-place match where Lockett gained revenge with a 5-2 decision.

Other Aggies to compete included Cris Brines (149), Frank Richmond (174) and Daniel Price (174) who each finished 1-2, Elliot Kelly (184) who finished 3-2, and Ronnie Silva (197) and Dan Schon (197) who were each 2-2. Shawn Haratini lost his only match at 141.

The Aggies return to dual action with a matchup against Oregon State at Hickey Gym at 7 p.m. next Saturday.
