Trio Of Aggies Place At California Collegiate Wrestling Invite

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Sophomore Eliot Kelly advanced to the championship match of the 184-pound bracket to lead a trio of UC Davis place-winners at the California Collegiate Wrestling Invitational at San Francisco State Saturday. The Aggies finished sixth in the tournament with 47.5 points, despite having just a three-man contingent.

After beating Stanford's Mark Egesdal, 7-5, in the quarterfinals, Kelly bested Fresno State's Jatinder Singh in a 11-2 decision in the semis. He eventually lost to David O'Brien of Southern Oregon in the title bout.

UC Davis 133-pounder David Espinosa and 141-pounder Omar Gaitan each had third-place finishes in their respective weight classes. Espinosa defeated S.F. State's Alex Butler, 7-2, in his third-place matchup; while Gaitan topped Zach Flake of Lassen College in an 8-5 bout. Gaitan shutout Menlo's Tony Martinez, 7-0, to advance to the third-place match.

Fresno State won the tournament with a total of 161.5 points while Cal St. Bakersfield took a close second at 146.0.

UC Davis wrestling also hosts a Pac-10 Conference dual against Arizona State tonight at 7 p.m.

Omar Gaitan (141) - won major dec. John Henworth (Menlo), 16-2' lost dec. Zach Flake (Lassen CC), 11-5; won tech fall Brandon Barrett (Lassen CC), 23-7; won major dec. Jeff Johnson(SFSU), 12-4; won dec. Tony Martinez (Menlo), 7-0; won dec. Zach Flake (Lassen CC), 8-5. (3rd place).
