DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis wrestling team ended a six-dual homestand on Saturday by splitting the final home duals of the season. The Aggies took a 36-9 win over Portland State followed by a loss later in the evening to Boise State 25-14 bringing the UC Davis season record to 6-8 overall and 4-4 in the Pac-10.
The Aggies got the day started by winning the first four matches in their dual versus Portland State. Marcos Orozco had three near-falls in the first period of the 125-pound match to help him to a 17-2 technical fall over Bricen Yakabe four minutes and 22 seconds into the match.
Omar Gaitan and No. 7 Derek Moore each won by forfeit before Shawn Haratani took Adam Duryee into overtime in the 149-pound match. Haratani was able to score on a takedown in overtime to collect a 4-2 decision.
At 157-pounds, Portland's Kainoa Casco used a late takedown to capture a narrow 14-13 win over Jon Clark. Following Clark's loss, Dustin Noack, who collected his first win of the season on Friday, pinned Chris Feist just one minute and 44 seconds into the 165-pound match-up to further the Aggies' lead to 26-3.
UC Davis won the final three matches of the dual with Tyler Bernacchi taking a 9-2 decision over Sean Murphy at 184 followed by a major decision win by Eliot Kelly, who had two near-falls and a reversal in his match against Joey Nobriga. Broc Maffia rounded out the wins for the Aggies with a 4-2 decision over Jake Schneider. UC Davis won the dual 36-9.
In the second dual of the day against Boise State, Orozco once again started the dual off at 125-pounds. Orozco had a close fought match with Cory Fish, but came up short in a 3-0 decision.
At 133-pounds, Gaitan used an evening-high nine takedowns to collect a 20-7 major decision over Jeremy Baker. Moore followed suit with a major decision over Jordan Brock. Moore had four two-point takedowns and a reversal plus 4:30 riding time that earned him the 11-2 win.
At 149-pounds, the Broncos' Tyler Sherfey pinned Padilla two minutes and 41 seconds into the match to give Boise State a 9-8 lead. The Bronco's further distanced themselves as No. 12 Ben Cherrington took a 10-2 major decision over Noack in the 157-pound match.
At 165-pounds, Clark took Jonathan Nunez into overtime after tying the match at 5-5 in regulation periods. Clark scored on a takedown 35 seconds into the overtime period to grab the 7-5 decision. Bernacchi followed with a 5-2 decision in the 184-pound match-up over Jason Cates to bring the Aggies within five with a dual score of 19-14.
The Broncos grabbed wins in the final two matches with Casey Phelps taking a 11-5 decision over Kelly and Andy Patrick collecting a 11-4 decision over Evan Hendrix in the heavyweight match which brought the final dual score to 25-14 in favor of Boise State.
"We knew Boise would be tough and I think if we had our full lineup we would have faired much better. With that said, we had some big performers, such as Jon Clark, who wrestled well for us," said head coach Lennie Zalesky of the loss.
Saturday night marked the final home dual for the Aggies this season and the three Aggie seniors: Jesse Padilla, David Espinosa and Frank Richmond were honored for their contributions to the UC Davis wrestling program.
In other Aggie wrestling news, Nexi Delgado was the lone UC Davis wrestler to compete in the 30th Annual Collegiate Wrestling Invitational hosted by San Francisco State on Saturday. Delgado defeated Darrell Goodpaster of Cal State Bakersfield in a 13-3 major decision to take third place in the 149-pound weight class.
UC Davis will be in action next at Southern Oregon on Friday, Feb. 10, match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
