DAVIS, Calif. - Despite a 4-3 upset by Aggie 165-pounder Frank Richmond over 19th-ranked Patrick Pitsch, Arizona State won four major decisions to claim a 22-14 win over UC Davis in a Pacific-10 Conference wrestling dual match at Upper Hickey Gym Saturday.

The Sun Devils improve to 8-6-1 and remain undefeated in Pac-10 contests with a 5-0 mark. The Aggies even their overall and conference records to 4-4-1 and 3-3-1, respectively.

"It came down to the last match and that says a lot about our team," said UC Davis head coach Lennie Zalesky. "All in all, we wrestled well even though I thought 184s [Brandon Bear] could have had a different outcome."

ASU's Cain Velasquez opened the match with a 21-8 win over Aggie senior Flynn Ficker at the 285-pound division, then Jeremy Mendoza scored a 9-0 shutout over Pancho Manriquez to put Arizona State out to an 8-0 start. UC Davis tied the team scoring after Derek Moore won a 13-1 major over John Espinoza in the 133-pound bout and Jeff Bristol scored a 10-1 victory over Chris Frieje at 141 pounds.

In the 149-pound bout, Patrick Williams held off a late charge by Aggie sophomore Daniel Murphree, capturing a 9-8 win and three team points. Williams led 6-3 after the first round, but Murphree battled back in the third, scoring a one-point escape and a two-point takedown.

Brian Stith, ranked 14th nationally at 157s, scored a major decision over Jesse Padilla. Stith enjoyed a six-point third frame, scoring a reversal and a pair of takedowns.

After Richmond's upset of Pitsch at 165 pounds, senior Ronnie Silva captured an 8-5 victory over ASU freshman Rick Renzi. However, Sun Devil's 10th-ranked junior C.B. Dolloway won a 6-1 over Aggie Brandon Bear and 4th-ranked Ryan Bader claimed a 9-1 major over Michael Clarkston to seal the win for ASU.
