DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis earned a forfeit at 285 and a major decision at 157, but Stanford rallied to clinch a 20-19 victory Saturday in a Pac-10 matchup at Hickey Gym in Davis, Calif. With the loss, UC Davis is now 3-10 overall and 1-4 in the Pac-10 while Stanford improves to 9-7-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the Pac-10.
Stanford jumped to a quick start with freshman Ryan Mango pinning UC Davis' Chris Armendariz at the 1:11 mark of the 125 pound matchup.
Brandon Low, ranked 15th nationally, would get UC Davis back on the board with a 7-3 decision over Justin Paulsen at 133. Low dominated the second half with an escape and a takedown to take a 4-2 lead, then used a takedown with only one second remaining for the win. With over a minute of riding time, Low earned an additional bonus point and picked up UC Davis' first three points.
Bryan Osuna continued the Aggie win streak with a 7-2 decision at 141 pounds. He battled Bret Baumbach throughout the first period and took a 2-1 lead going into next round. Osuna then had takedowns in the second and third period plus an additional point for over three minutes of riding time to get the win. UC Davis equalized the score at 6 points apiece going into the 149 pound matchup.
15th-ranked Barrett Abel found himself in a battle with Stanford's Tyler Parker with the two going scoreless through the first two periods. Abel was first on the board with an escape, then followed that with a takedown to go up 3-0. Parker was unable to get a move of his own off and Abel took an additional point for over three minutes of riding time to get the 3-0 decision.
Trevor Machado-Ching came out strong for the Aggies in his 157 pound matchup against Mike Kent. Machado-Ching had three takedowns in the first period and added two more in the second period to take an 11-4 lead going into the final period. Machado-Ching continued to dominate and had a 17-7 major decision at the end of the bout, then earned an extra point for nearly two minutes of riding time. The four points he earned for UC Davis gave the Aggies a 13-6 lead.
Stanford, however, won the next four bouts and had major decisions at 184 and 197 to clinch the win. Zack Giesen, ranked 12th nationally took a 17-6 major decision over Rory McBryde at 184 to give the Cardinal a three-point advantage.
With the match on the line, UC Davis' Shawn Hoehne held Richard Kessler to a decision, however Kessler earned an additional point for riding time to bring the score to a 9-1 major decision and got the Cardinal four extra points.
UC Davis earned an extra six points from a forfeit at 285, however it was not enough to overcome the Stanford rally.
The Aggies close out the regular season with Pac-10 dual matches at Cal Poly Feb. 12 and Cal State Bakersfield Feb. 13. Friday's match against the Mustangs will begin at 6:30 p.m. while Saturday's is set for a 7:00 p.m. start time.
