DAVIS, Calif. - Oregon State won the first three matches against UC Davis on Saturday night as the Beavers beat the Aggies 20-15 in a Pac-10 Conference wrestling match before 239 fans at Hickey Gym.

UC Davis dropped to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the Pac-10 while the Beavers - who lost to Stanford 18-17 earlier in the day - improved to 10-6 overall and 6-2 in conference action. Michael Font (165), Brandon Bear (184), Michael Clarkston (197), Tommy Schurkamp (125) and Derek Moore (133) each won decisions for UC Davis as the Aggies split the 10 contested matches.

"At some weights I think we wrestled very well but I think at others we could've wrestled better," said UC Davis coach Lennie Zalesky. "To beat Oregon State everyone needs to be one. You can't have a down match."

The Beavers opened the match strong on Saturday night, winning the first three matches at 141, 149 and 157 pounds. Kyle Larson started with a 14-6 major decision at 141 over the Aggies' Shawn Haratani before Tony Hook followed with a 7-3 decision over the Kevin Jones at 149.

Oregon State posted an upset at 157 as Brian Durkoop beat 17th-ranked Jeremiah Jarvis 12-6. Michael Font's 8-6 victory over Orlando Perez at 165 got UC Davis on the board, cutting the Beavers' lead to 10-3. Another major decision - this one a 15-6 win by Matt Ellis over Frank Richmond at 174 made it 14-3.

UC Davis, however, rallied down the stretch, winning four of the final five bouts. Brandon Bear, ranked fourth in the Pac-10, beat Jed Pennell, ranked third in the conference, 9-5 and Michael Clarkston posted a 7-2 decision over Kurt Willener at 197, making it 14-9. Bear's win was his ninth straight.

The Beavers, however, reasserted control when Jamie Rakevich posted a first-period pin against UC Davis' Dan Schon at heavyweight. Schurkamp, ranked third in the Pac-10, doubled up the Pac-10's fourth-ranked wrestler, Eric Stevenson, 12-6, before Moore's 9-3 winover Bobby Pfennings brought UC Davis to the final score of 20-15.

The Aggies return to action on Friday with a 7 p.m. match at Hickey Gym against Stanford. UC Davis will face Portland State next Saturday at noon, also at Hickey Gym.
