DAVIS, Calif. -
Stanford won the final five matches of its wrestling dual against UC Davis on Friday night, recording a 21-15 Pac-10 Conference win before 302 fans at Hickey Gym.
UC Davis lost its second consecutive dual, falling to 5-7 overall and 2-4 in Pac-10 action. Stanford improved to 9-4 overall and 5-2 in conference action.
The Aggies won four of the first five matches on Friday night, staking themselves to a 15-3 lead. However, the Cardinal earned wins by Brad Metzler (141), Luis Vendrell (149), Matt Gentry (157), Brian Perry (165) and Imad Kharbush (174) in the final five bouts to roar back for the win. Metzler had a fall over Shawn Haratani for six key points while the remaining victories were decisions.
Brandon Bear - ranked second in the Pac-10 - won his 11th straight match this season, improving his record to 16-7, as he opened the match with an 11-4 win over Jon Garfinkel at 184. Larry Ozowara's 17-10 win against Ronnie Silva at 197 got the Cardinal on the board with a decision, but Michael Clarkston - normally a 197-pounder - began a string of three straight Aggie wins with a 9-3 victory over Shawn Ritzenthaler at heavyweight.
Tommy Schurkamp - ranked first in the conference among 125-pounders - recorded the most exciting win of the night for UC Davis, picking up a defensive pin against Tanner Gardner that helped UC Davis jump to a 12-3 lead. Derek Moore's 7-6 victory over Paul Gross at 133 - punctuated by a last -second two-point takedown and then another point for riding time - gave UC Davis a 15-3 team lead.
However, that would be the Aggies' final win as Metzler pinned Haratini at 141 and Vendrell edged Jones 7-5 at 149 to bring Stanford to within three points at 15-12. Matt Gentry, ranked second nationally at 157, then improved his incredible season record to 33-0 with a hard-fought 9-3 win over 20th-ranked Jeremiah Jarvis.
Perry put the Cardinal in the lead for good at 165 pounds, scoring three points in the third period to edge Michael Font
, 8-7. Kharbush capped the rally with an 8-5 victory over Daniel Price at 174, scoring five points in the first period.
"Every match was key and I think Stanford wrestled really well," said UC Davis coach Lennie Zalesky. "They took it to us in the matches they won and that's to their credit."
