DAVIS, Calif. - Sophomore Frank Richmond and junior Michael Clarkston scored first-period wins by fall at 174 and 197 pounds, respectively, to lead UC Davis to a 48-0 shutout victory over Portland State in a Pacific-10 Conference wrestling dual match at Hickey Gym Saturday afternoon. Richmond pinned Josh Gustafson in a mere 43 seconds to open the match, then Clarkston disposed of Allen Kennett in 2:29 just two bouts later.
The Aggies improve to 6-7 on the year, and 3-4 in Pac-10 action. The Vikings drop to 1-12 overall, and remain winless at 0-6 in conference duals.
Ronnie Silva extended the lead to 22-0 with his 10-0 victory over Adam Conner in the heavyweight division. UC Davis also scored major decisions by Derek Moore, who beat Lucas Hambleton, 17-7 at 133 pounds; and by Shawn Haratani, who outlasted Ben Barch, 13-5, at the 141-pound class. Haratani scored a combination of a reversal and three-point near fall late in the first period to overcome an early 3-2 deficit.
Kevin Jones and Eddie Dahlen had perhaps the closest bout at 149 pounds. Dahlen led 5-2 near the end of the second period, but Jones earned a penalty point on Dahlen's second stall warning with 0:19 remaining. Jones opened the third period with a one-point escape, then added a takedown at 1:32 to hold a 6-5 lead. However, Dahlen escaped just 20 seconds later to force a 6-6 tie.
In the final minute of the third period, Dahlen nearly scored a two-point takedown but Jones was able to drag his opponent out of the ring to remain standing. With 39 seconds remaining in regulation, the Aggie senior posted a takedown followed by a two-point near fall, breaking the 6-6 tie en route to a 10-6 decision.
Senior Michael Font closed the match with an 11-5 victory over Devin Mair at 165 pounds. At the 1:24 mark in the second period, Font scored a takedown then quickly followed with a three-point near fall to effectively ice the win. UC Davis also won six-point forfeits at 125, 157 and 184 pounds.
The Aggies return to the road for a Pac-10 dual at Cal Poly on February 20.
