SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - UC Davis won the final four wrestling matches at 25th-ranked Cal Poly on Friday night, nearly erasing an 18-0 deficit, in a hard-luck 18-17 Pacific-10 Conference loss to the Mustangs at Mott Gym.

The defeat drops the Aggies' overall record to 6-8 and their conference mark to 3-5 while Cal Poly improves to 8-8 overall and 4-4 in Pac-10 matches.

Cal Poly won the evening's first six matches by decision to forge an 18-0 advantage heading into the 157-pound matchup between Jeremiah Jarvis and Keith Kroeger. Jarvis, however, dominated the match and led 13-4 in the third period before a pin at the 5:37 mark gave the Aggies their first six team points.

Michael Font then recorded an 11-4 victory over Eric Shortenhaus at 165 to cut the lead in half before a 17-1 technical fall win by Frank Richmond over Joe Brady at 174 brought the Aggies to within four points at 18-14.

Needing a major decision to tie, the Aggies came up just shy in the final match as Brandon Bear recorded n 6-4 win over Ryan Halsey at 184. The match was tied 3-3 in the third period but Bear picked up a three-point near fall with 1:10 remaining for the winning points.

UC Davis lost the first six matches by a total of 14 points, including a tough 5-4 loss by Michael Clarkston against Ralph Garcia in the first bout at 197. Arturo Basulton edged Evan Hendrix 9-5 at 285, Vic Moreno narrowly beat Tommy Schurkamp 3-2 at 125 and Darrel Vasquez beat Derek Moore at 133 as the Mustangs led 12-0.

A 4-1 win by Steve Esparza over Cris Brines at 141 and a 6-3 victory by Matt Cox against Kevin Jones at 149 staked the Mustangs to their 18-0 lead, setting up the Aggies' rally.
