TEMPE, Ariz. - Sixth-seeded Jesse Miramontes of Cal State Fullerton pinned top-seeded Tommy Schurkamp of UC Davis early in the first round on Monday night, claiming the 125-pound title at the Pacific-10 Conference Wrestling Championships at Arizona State.

Schurkamp is one of two Aggies who advanced to the NCAA Division I Championships later this month at St. Louis, Mo., by virtue of a top-three finish at the Pac-10 Championships while two others received wildcards.

Second-seeded Brandon Bear lost his first match on Sunday in the 184-pound weight class but rebounded to win four straight and finish third on Monday afternoon, also advancing to the national championships.

Jeremiah Jarvis - a two-time qualifier for the national meet - placed fourth a 157 pounds but received one of 11 wildcard selections which were announced by the conference late Monday night. Fifth-seeded Derek Moore (133) also received a wildcard after advancing to the semifinals and then medical forfeiting his remaining matches.

Schurkamp's runner-up finish at the conference championship - the fourth in program history - helped UC Davis finished eighth in the team standings with 60 points. Boise State claimed the Pac-10 title with 94.5 points, edging Cal Poly which was second with 91. Cal State Fullerton was third with 89.5

Schurkamp opened the Pac-10 Championships with a pair of wins on Sunday, including a technical fall win against Zac Enoch of Portland State. But he ran into a buzzsaw in Miramontes, who claimed the title with three consecutive falls, including pinning Schurkamp just 19 seconds into their match.

"There were a lot of good wrestlers in that weight class," said Aggie coach Lennie Zalesky. "Anytime you can make it to the finals at Pac-10's, you've done well."

Schurkamp will be making his first appearance at the national championships, as is Bear who battled back from an early loss to finish third. Bear, whose 14-match winning streak was snapped with Sunday's loss to Casey Phelps of Boise State, stayed alive with two wins later in the day to move into the consolation semifinals. There, he earned a rematch with Phelps, beating him 8-6 and advancing to the third-place final where he pinned top-seeded Dan Pitsch of Oregon State in 6 minutes.

"Brandon did a good job of coming back," said Zalesky. "He knows he can compete with anyone in his weight class."

Jarvis was dropped into the consolation bracket after making it to the semifinals on Sunday but then beat sixth-seeded Dustin Vance of Cal State Fullerton 4-3 to earn a bout with Oregon's Joey Bracamonte. However, Bracamonte gained revenge on an earlier loss to Jarvis, finishing third with a 15-5 major decision against Jarvis.

Jarvis, the defending conference champion at 157 pounds, has won a match in the championship bracket at the NCAA Championships each of the last two seasons.

Frank Richmond (174) and Michael Clarkston (197) needed a pair of wins on Monday to earn a berth to the NCAA Championships, but Richmond lost to Ron Renzi of Arizona State in the consolation semis, 6-4, and then was pinned by Oregon's Chet McBee in the fifth-place match.

Clarkston also lost a pair of matches on Monday and placed sixth. Deremk Moore (133) earned a semifinal berth on Sunday but did not wrestle in that match nor his consolation bouts due to injury defaults.

Schurkamp was hoping to join Jarvis as UC Davis' only Pac-10 champions in program history.

UC Davis also sent four wrestlers to the NCAA Championships in 2001.
