KANSAS CITY, Mo. - UC Davis junior Jeremiah Jarvis won his opening round match in the 157-pound weight class of the 2003 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at Kemper Arena on Thursday before dropping into the wrestleback bracket after losing to second-seeded Keaton Anderson of Ohio State in the second round.

Jarvis, who beat Gabe Webster of Cornell, 7-2, in his first-round match, will face Arizona State's Rocky Smart on Friday morning at 8 a.m. (PST) in the wrestleback bracket. Jarvis beat Smart, 8-2, in the semifinals of the Pacific-10 Conference Championships at Boise, Idaho, earlier this month.

The unseeded Jarvis opened a 5-0 lead in the first period against Webster on Thursday before going on for the win but then had to face the second-seeded Anderson. Anderson won the match, 9-4.

"Jeremiah wrestled well in the first round and had his chances against Anderson in the second," said UC Davis coach Lennie Zalesky. "But number two seeds are hard to beat."

Jarvis is the only Aggie wrestler at the championships and his making his second consecutive appearance at the tournament. He scored two points for UC Davis. Oklahoma State leads the tournament.
