FULLERTON, Calif. - Seventh-ranked Derek Moore posted a 1-0 decision against No. 15 Mitch Mueller of Iowa State on Saturday night as the UC Davis senior claimed the 141-pound championship at the Fullerton Open, leading six Aggie placewinners at the all-day tournament.
Marcos Orozco won his first three matches before dropping a close 5-2 decision to Richard Byrd of Embry-Riddle and finished second at 125 pounds while Omar Gaitan won four straight at 133 before losing in the title bout to unattached competitor Darrell Vasquez and also taking second. Orozco highlighted his three wins on the way to the final with a fall at 1:49 over Rick Bernal of Rio Hondo College while Gaitan also had a fall among his four wins when he pinned Frankie Villaescusa in 3:47.
