FULLERTON, Calif. - Redshirt junior Barrett Abel pinned CBU's Benjamin Garcia at the 6:37 mark to take first place at 149-pounds at the Fullerton Open Saturday in Fullerton, Calif. Abel was one of four Aggies to place at the open tournament.

Abel went 5-0 on the day to advance to the championship bout. He defeated GCU's Dan Rubio after pinning him in a mere 23 seconds, then won by technical fall over John Cardenas, competing unattached for Cal State Bakersfield, to continue through the bracket. Abel then went on to a 16-5 major decision over San Francisco State's Josh Nolan to advance to the championship bout where he defeated Garcia with a pin at the 6:37 mark.

Ricky Alcala was 3-0 on the day to finish second at 285-pounds. After two byes, Alcala pinned Durazo Chuck at 5:27 then won by a 13-5 major decision over Cal State Bakersfield's Levi Cooper who was competing unattached. Alcala then took a 5-2 decision over unattached wrestler Davis Rafeal to advance to the championship round. Alcala, however, defaulted before the final bout began.

UC Davis freshman Shawn Hoehne, competing unattached, also advanced to the championship round at 197-pounds and finished in second after losing by a narrow 5-3 decision to Sacramento State's Vince Bordi. Hoehne pinned GCU's Brian Cooper at the 5:47 mark then had another pin against Jake Jeremiah of Cerritos after only 19 seconds. Hoehne advanced to the championship match by a 14-3 technical fall over Karam Basra of San Francisco State.

Joey Wilson finished third at 165-pounds. After losing a 2-1 decision to GCU's Stephen Towne, Wilson pinned Justin Chavez at the 1:04 mark. Wilson then took a 10-3 decision over Sergio Cortez who competed unattached for Arizona State and a 12-4 major decision against Stanford's Kyler Hasson. Wilson then defeated Kyle Meyer, competing unattached for Stanford, and Cal State Fullerton's Justin Danz to advance to the third-place match. Wilson edged GCU's Mike Fucci, competing unattached, by a 3-2 decision to finish third.

At 125-pounds, Mark Jay Acosta nearly advanced to the third-place match, but fell just shy after falling by a 13-5 major decision to Frank Lomas, who was competing unattached for Cal State Bakersfield. Acosta was 5-2 on the day, including two pins and a technical fall victory.

Stephan Hampton nearly advanced to the third-place match at 184-pounds but fell just short with a loss by decision in the semifinal match. Hampton was 4-2 overall.

Rory McBryde, also competing at 184-pounds, was also 4-2 overall.

In other Aggie action, Morgan Flaharty was 0-2 at 141-pounds while Trevor Machado-Ching was 4-1 at 157-pounds. David Watts, also competing at 157-pounds, finished the day with a 3-2 record. Abe Otrambo was 0-1 at 197-pounds. He lost his first bout by medical forfeit before withdrawing from the competition due to injury.

UC Davis will next travel to Primm, Nev. to compete at the Cliff Keen Collegiate Invitational Dec. 4-5.
