LAS VEGAS, Nev. - After losing a 4-2 overtime decision to seventh-seeded Justin Nestor of Pittsburgh, Aggie junior Frank Richmond won three straight bouts in the 165-pound wrestleback to highlight UC Davis action at the 23rd-annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational at the Cashman Center Friday.

Richmond, who pinned Adams State's Scott Koppenhafer in the pigtails round, defeated Buffalo's Mickey Moran, 10-5, then Cornell's Dave Post, 7-2 in his first two wrestleback bouts. He then concluded his first day with a 1:44 pin of Donaco Watts of Missouri Valley.

Junior Michael Clarkston also enjoyed a strong showing in the 197-pound wrestlebacks after a tough first-round loss. He lost a 21-5 technical fall to No. 5 Ryan Flaherty of Wisconsin, then proceeded to record back-to-back pins over Wyoming's Malcolm Havens and Buffalo's Harold Sherrell. Richmond pinned Havens in 7:00, then disposed of Sherrell in a 3:24 bout.

Senior 184-pounder Brandon Bear and sophomore 133-pounder Derek Moore represented UC Davis' two seeded competitors. Bear, seeded eighth, finished 3-1 on the day. He beat Matt Maclag of Wisconsin in a 13-5 major decision, then lost to seventh-seed Dan Pitsch of Oregon State in a 6-2 battle. Bear later recorded a 7-5 overtime victory of Fresno State's Jat Chatha and an 8-2 triumph of North Idaho's Josh Edmondson.

Eighth-seeded Moore easily beat North Carolina State's Jeff Breese, 16-1, in the round of 32 to open his Friday action, but lost an 18-4 major decision to Cornell's defending NCAA 125-pound champion Travis Lee in the quarterfinals.

Michigan holds a slight 95.5-92.5 edge in team scoring over Nebraska after Day 1. Only the top 10 team scores were available. Cal St. Bakersfield is the lone Pac-10 Conference member among the published leaders, holding 10th-place at 40.5 points.
