LAS VEGAS, Nev. - UC Davis senior Urijah Faber won five consecutive matches Saturday in the 133-pound weight class at the 2002 Cliff Keen Invitational, finishing fourth at the prestigious tournament.

Faber, seeded sixth, was the highest finisher of UC Davis' 10 entries. Heavyweight Jason Paul and 141-pounder Cris Brines each won two matches in the wrestleback brackets on Saturday before being eliminated.

After winning his first-round match during Friday's first round at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Faber was sent to the wrestleback bracket with a loss to Matt Sanchez of Cal St. Bakersfield. But Faber made himself at home on the mat on Saturday, pinning Nick Magee of North Dakota State and Matthew Benza of Air Force in a just over a combined seven minutes of wrestling as he began his move through the wrestleback bracket. A forfeit win over Erkin Tadzhimetov of Colby was followed by a 13-12 victory over Mark Jayne of Illinois and a 6-3 revenge win against Sanchez.

The five wins propelled Faber into the third-place match against Foley Dowd of Michigan, but Dowd was able to edge Faber, 3-1.

Paul and Brines also attempted to move their way through the wrestleback bracket on Saturday with Paul getting a default win against Bill Churchwell of North Carolina State and then a pin in 4:34 versus Adam Nuru of Missouri Valley, before being eliminated by Criston Bietz of Augustana, 7-1. Brines downed Dana Yote of Iowa Central, 6-0, and Jeff Owens of Cal Poly, 8-4, before losing by fall against Ryan McCallum of North Carolina State.

After earning just three wins on Friday, UC Davis wrestlers picked up 12 more on Saturday. Other Aggies with at least one win during the second day of competition included Tommy Schurkamp (125), Nick Davis (149) and Mike Font (174).

Minnesota won the tournament with 131 points, edging Illinois which had 123.5.
