RENO, Nev. - UC Davis wrestler Jeremiah Jarvis pinned second-ranked Shane Roller of Oklahoma State in 1 minute, 53 seconds on Thursday night to claim the 157-pound title at the Reno Tournament of Champions, helping lead the Aggies to an impressive ninth-place finish.

Jarvis, who recorded four pins in the one-day event and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament, was one of two Aggies to advance to finals. Senior Urijah Faber also wrestled for a championship, losing a heart-breaking 6-4 decision to top-ranked Johnny Thompson of Oklahoma State in the final.

"It was like a dream come true to watch him win that match. I've never seen such an upset."

Thompson is the defending NCAA champion at 133 pounds, while Roller placed fourth at 157.

Jarvis, who qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season, was seeded third at Reno and wasted little time in advancing to the final. He opened with pins against Boise State's Ben Cherington in 2:40 and Dusty Vaughn of Lassen College in 3:23. A 12-7 victory over Justin Nestor of Pittsburgh in the quarterfinals preceded a pin against second-seeded Mike Tolar of Kent State in 2:42.

Third-seeded Jarvis then handled the highly-ranked Roller, finishing the match in the first round.

"It was like a dream come true to watch him win that match," said UC Davis Coach Lennie Zalesky. "I've never seen such an upset."

Faber, seeded second at 133, was also dominate on his way to the championship match, winning by pins in his first two bouts. He pinned Nolan Harris of Southern Oregon in 2:20 in the first round and then beat Cal Poly's Andy Kim in 4:59 in the second. He followed with a 10-2 major decision victory over Travis Drake of Appalachian State in the quarterfinals and then beat Shawn Bunch of Edinboro (Pa.) in the semifinals, 10-6.

Oklahoma State won the team title with 139 points, while Edinboro and Arizona State tied for second with 89.5. Eight Pacific-10 Conference teams competed in the event with UC Davis placing fourth among the group and the highest of any California school.

Seven other Aggie wrestlers won at least two matches during the tournament, including Tommy Schurkamp who was 4-2 at 125 pounds, and Mike Anderson who had the same mark at 141. Nick Davis (149), Frank Richmond (157), Mike Font (165), Shannon Sams (174) and Michael Clarkston (197) also had at least two wins each.

The Aggies will be off until traveling to face perenial power Iowa on Jan. 3. The dual will mark a coaching matchup between Lennie Zalesky and his brother, Jim, the head coach of the Hawkeyes.
