UC Davis (3-12, 1-6 Pac-10) prepares to compete in the 2010 Pac-10 Wrestling Championships Feb. 26-27, which it will also host... The two-day tournament will begin Friday, Feb. 26 at noon with the first session and will continue into Saturday., Feb. 27.. The Pac-10 Wrestling Championship Finals will begin Saturday at 4 pm.
ABOUT THE PAC-10 WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2010 Pac-10 Wrestling Championships will feature some of the best wrestling in the nation as all eight teams descend on The Pavilion... Three of the eight teams are currently ranked in the top-20 nationally: No. 12 Boise State, No. 15 Oregon State and No. 16 Cal Poly... In addition, nine Pac-10 wrestlers are ranked in the top-10 nationally by Intermat... Boise State returns as defending champions, having won the last two straight team titles... Oregon State leads the Pac-10 with most team titles all-time with 17 while Arizona State has won 16 team titles... Since 2000, Boise State and Arizona State have won eight of the last nine Pac-10 Championships.
Tickets can be purchased through the UC Davis Ticket Office by calling (530) 752-1915... Tickets can also be purchased at The Pavilion ticket windows Friday and Saturday... Ticket windows will open approximately one hour before the beginning of each session.
Live video streaming will be provided on the Pac-10 website with former UC Davis wrestlers Jeremiah Jarvis and Dustin Noack providing live commentary throughout the two-day competition... Brackets will be updated throughout both days on the UC Davis website and complete coverage will be posted to the Pac-10 website at the end of each day.
2009 PAC-10 WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS RECAP
UC Davis finished fourth overall and were led by Marcos Orozco (125), Ricky Alcala (285) and Barrett Abel (149) who each placed third individually... Alcala and Orozco received automatic bids to the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships while Brandon Low was selected as an at-large qualifier... UC Davis advanced a total of five wrestlers to the third-place matches... Jon Clark (184), Low and Abe Otrambo (197) all finished fourth.
SCOUTING THE FIELD
Leading the weight class is defending champion Anthony Robles of Arizona State who is 25-2 overall and 16-0 in dual meet action... Robles is currently ranked third in the country by Amateur Wrestling News and fourth nationally by InterMat... Robles was named the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler last year... Oregon State's Jason Lara is ranked 15th nationally by InterMat and is 30-6 overall.
Boise State's Andrew Hochstrasser leads the conference and is currently ranked second nationally by InterMat... Hochstrasser is 8-0 overall... UC Davis' Brandon Low moved up to 12th nationally in the latest InterMat poll and is a perfect 6-0 in Pac-10 dual meet action... Low is currently riding a seven-match win streak entering the weekend... Oregon State's Kelly Kubec is third in the Pac-10 and 16th overall while Cal Poly's Boris Novachkov is 13th in the country and fourth in the conference.
Five of the eight Pac-10 programs have wrestlers ranked in the top-20 nationally... Junior Levi Jones of Boise State is the top-ranked wrestler in the conference and is currently fifth nationally... Jones is 17-3 overall and 13-1 in dual competition and leads the team in falls with seven... Filip Novachkov of Cal Poly is sixth nationally and second in the Pac-10 with a 21-5 overall record while Cal State Bakersfield's Elijah Nacita is ranked 11th nationally... Arizona State's Chris Drouin is 12th and Oregon State's Mike Mangrum is 17th.
Boise State's Jason Chamberlain sits atop the Pac-10 rankings and is ranked sixth nationally while UC Davis' Barrett Abel is 16th nationally and second in the conference... Chamberlain is 20-7 overall while Abel is 18-7 overall... Arizona State's Vicente Varela is third.
Three Pac-10 wrestlers are ranked in the top-15 nationally at 157 pounds, led by Boise State's Adam Hall who is third... Hall is 24-2 overall to lead the Broncos in overall wins and owns a 16-0 dual meet record... He leads the Broncos in major decisions with 13... Cal Poly's Chase Pami is tenth nationally with a 23-5 record and has won the last three straight duals by major decision... Oregon State's Keegan Davis is ranked 13th.
The only weight class without a Pac-10 wrestler in the top-20, Nick Amuchastegui at Stanford is currently leading the conference... He leads the Cardinal in wins with 27 and is 27-4 overall and 17-1 in dual competition... Dan Brascetta of Oregon State and Joey Granata of Cal State Bakersfield will also look to challenge in this class.
Oregon State's Colby Covington is ranked eighth in the country and currently owns a 12-match win streak entering the weekend... He is 35-5 overall and leads the team in pins with 15... Boise State's Nate Lee is 18th nationally while Cal Poly's Ryan DesRoches is 19th.
Boise State's Kirk Smith leads the nation and the Pac-10 and is currently undefeated at 21-0... Stanford's Zack Geisen is 12th nationally and owns a 27-4 overall record.
Cal State Bakersfield's Riley Orozco leads the conference and is ranked 20th nationally... He owns a 19-6 overall record and is undefeated in Pac-10 action at 7-0... Oregon State's Chad Hanke and Cal Poly's Ryan Smith will also look to challenge for a title.
The competition at heavyweight is wide open as any of the top-five wrestlers in the conference have a chance at an individual title... Mitch Monteiro of Cal State Bakersfield currently tops the Pac-10 rankings and is 12th nationally while Oregon State's Clayton Jack is 15th in the country... UC Davis' Ricky Alcala is 18th while Arizona State's Erik Nye is 20th.
AGGIES IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
Intermat's latest poll has Brandon Low (133) ranked 12th... Barrett Abel (149) is 16th and Ricky Alcala (285) is 18th... WIN Magazine has Low at No. 15 and Abel at No. 19... Low is ranked tenth by d1collegewrestling.net, his highest ranking of the season... Abel is 12th while Alcala is 21st.
AGGIES IN THE PAC-10 PICTURE
Brandon Low is currently second in the Pac-10 at 133 and is undefeated in conference action at 6-0... Barrett Abel ranks second in the conference at 149 pounds and owns a 7-3 record against Pac-10 opponents... Ricky Alcala is fourth at 285.
RECAP: CAL POLY 34, UC DAVIS 7
Brandon Low and Ricky Alcala each picked up victories for UC Davis but Cal Poly, ranked 16th at the time, posted wins in the remaining eight matches to take a 34-7 win at Mott Gym... Low upset Boris Novachkov, ranked eighth at the time, by a 6-3 decision in the 133 pound matchup... Cal Poly captured the next seven matches before Ricky Alcala won a 14-5 major decision over Jim Powers in the heavyweight bout.
RECAP: CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD 39, UC DAVIS 4
Brandon Low earned the only Aggie win of the night as he took a 17-7 major decision over Justin Durham at 133 to reach his seventh-straight victory... Cal State Bakersfield won the remaining nine matches including a forfeit at 149 and a fall at 157.
Barrett Abel (149) and Ricky Alcala (285) are tied for the team lead in wins with 18 each... Alcala has posted 10 Pac-10 victories... Abel also leads the team in falls with five and technical falls with three... Joey Wilson has posted 17 wins while Trevor Machado-Ching has 14 victories this season.
Brandon Low (133) currently owns a seven-match win streak that is comprised of two falls and two major decisions... Ricky Alcala won five straight before having his streak snapped Feb. 13.
Five of the 10 who competed at the 2009 Pac-10 Championships return to challenge for a title in 2010: Brandon Low (133) finished third... Barrett Abel (149) finished third... Joey Wilson (157) finished fifth... Abe Otrambo (197) finished third... Ricky Alcala (285) finished third.
