MANHEIM, Pa. - Junior Ricky Alcala was named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division I All-Academic wrestling team for the 2009-10 wrestling season, it was announced Wednesday.
Alcala currently holds a 3.233 grade point average with a double major in exercise biology and Spanish.
The Arvin, Calif. native qualified for his second straight NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships after placing third at the 2010 Pac-10 Championships at 285 pounds. He finished with an overall dual meet record of 21-9 and was 13-6 in Pac-10 dual action. Alcala faced four nationally-wranked wrestlers over the course of the season and recorded a 6-2 upset over Cal State Fullerton's Kurt Klimek, ranked 19th nationally at the time, Jan. 29. Alcala finished the season ranked 17th nationally by InterMat.
To qualify for the All-Academic team, a wrestler must hold at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and have either been an NCAA qualifier or have won 60 percent of his total schedule.
The 2009-10 All-Academic individual team includes 61 NCAA qualifiers, 23 NCAA All-Americans, seven NCAA finalists and five NCAA champions. In all, 74 individuals representing 45 schools were honored on this year's team.
