An honorable mention All-American during her career at UC Davis, former Aggie great Des Abeyta joined her alma mater before the 2007-08 season and will start her seventh year on the program's coaching staff in 2014-15.

A master multi-tasker, Abeyta coordinates travel, film exchange, and equipment for the Aggies. She also assists with on-court instruction of both offense and defense, scouting, recruiting, camps and all other facets of the program.

Before returning to UC Davis, Abeyta spent two seasons as the varsity head coach at Forest Ridge HS in Bellevue, Wash. Abeyta also served as an assistant coach at North Seattle Community College from 2001-02.

Recognized as one of the best centers to ever play at UC Davis, Abeyta works closely with the Aggies' post players. She was key in the development of three-time first team all-Big West selection Paige Mintun. Mintun led the Aggies in scoring and rebounding as both a junior in 2009-10 and as a senior in 2010-11.

Last year, in 2012-13, Abeyta and the Aggies brought in three highly touted freshman post players. Alyson Doherty, a 6-foot-3 native of Lake Forest, Calif., was named to the Big West All-Freshman team after averaging 5.3 points and 4.9 rebounds. The former South Coast League MVP started 27 games as a true freshman. Celia Marfone made 24 starts while averaging 5.3 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. She finished third on the team, shooting 38.5 percent from the field and 80.4 percent at the free throw line. Heidi Johnson made one start while appearing in 28 games. She scored a career-high 12 points and grabbed six rebounds against rival Sacramento State.

As an Aggie standout from 1996 to 1999, Abeyta helped UC Davis to a 94-22 overall record during her four seasons. She earned all-West Region honors from both Kodak/WBCA and Daktronics in each of her junior and senior seasons, leading the team in scoring and rebounding both years. Abeyta's first team Kodak all-West Region selection earned her All-America honorable mention as well. Additionally, she was named first team all-California Collegiate Athletic Association during the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 seasons.

Abeyta also was a member of the Aggie team that finished third at the Div. II NCAA Tournament, playing alongside current head coach Jennifer Gross. She continues to rank among the school's career leaders in points and rebounds.

After graduating from UC Davis in 2000 with a degree in organizational studies, Abeyta played two years of professional basketball in Greece and Portugal before entering the coaching ranks in the state of Washington.
