SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Ellen Porshneva scored a game-high 17 points to lead all five Aggie starters in double figures as UC Davis captured its fifth straight win with an 85-72 victory over Cal State San Bernardino in a California Collegiate Athletic Association women's basketball game Friday night at Coussoulis Arena.
With the win the Aggies improve to 7-2 on the season, 2-1 in CCAA play, and snap a three-game road losing streak against the Coyotes. Cal State San Bernardino fall to 3-5 overall, 0-3 in conference action.
UC Davis jumped out to a 6-0 lead as San Bernardino could not convert on their first seven possessions, missing all five shots and committing three turnovers. After a brief spurt by the Coyotes, who took their only lead at 14-12, UC Davis was in total control of the game. The Aggies' 12-0 run midway through the first half pushed the lead to double-digits where it remained for the majority of the half.
UC Davis was relentless on the boards, grabbing 11 offensive rebounds in the first half, four by Jackie Turpin. The sophomore from San Diego posted a double-double in the first half alone, recording 10 points and 10 rebounds.
After San Bernardino cut the lead to eight with two and a half minutes in the half, the Aggies went to Porshneva on the block and the freshman responded, scoring the final six points as the Aggies took a 45-33 lead into the intermission.
In the second half the Aggies increased the lead to as much as 27 on a basket by Jessica Stewart at the 7:20 mark. The lead grew as the Aggie defense held the Coyotes without a field goal for almost six minutes midway through the half. When the Coyotes finally made a basket with 5;34 left, it triggered a 21-4 run that cut the Aggie lead to 10 with 1:29 to play.
Kim Omer then put the game away with a three-point basket with just under a minute remaining that broke the Coyotes' spirit. UC Davis added two Jennifer Decuir free throw for the final margin of victory.
"This was a good win tonight," said Aggie head coach Sandy Simpson. "We executed well on offense and committed only 11 turnovers. We were able to extend our lead in the second half with some key kids on the bench and that's when they made their run at the end. It was a good learning experience in clock management."
UC Davis finished the game shooting 49 percent from the field and a blistering 86 percent from the free throw line. The Aggies made all 10 free throws in the second half as they continued to find success at the charity stripe, having made 84.1 percent of their shots over the last five games.
In addition to her 17 points, Porshneva added seven rebounds in just 22 minutes, 10 below her average. Turpin finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Jessica Campbell finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and a game-high six assists. As a team the Aggies tied their season-high with 23 assists.
Cal State San Bernardino was led by Lacy Tanneberg's 13 points and eight rebounds, while Nikki Jones added 11 and Jenny Jemmett finished with 10.
UC Davis will next be in action on Saturday with a CCAA contest against Cal Poly Pomona in Pomona. Gametime is set for 5:30 p.m.
