POMONA, Calif. - Candice Allen scored a game-high 40 points and the Broncos snapped the Aggies' five-game winning streak as Cal Poly Pomona defeated UC Davis 109-92 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association women's basketball game Saturday night at Kellogg Gym.
With the loss the Aggies fall to 7-3 on the season, 2-2 in CCAA play while Pomona improves to 7-2, 3-1 in conference play.
The game began at a frantic pace and continued throughout the first half. There were nine lead changes in the first four and a half minutes with UC Davis getting the first lead greater than two points on Ellen Porshneva's jumper at the 14:40 mark, giving UC Davis a 15-12 edge. It grew to 18-12 on Kim Omer's three-pointer 30 seconds later. It was one of four three-pointers for Omer in the opening 20 minutes.
Pomona came out with a full-court press from the start and after trailing for the first 15 minutes, the press began to pay dividends. The Broncos went on a 17-5 run to take a 39-34 lead with just over five minutes remaining. Pomona was sparked by the play of senior Candice Allen, who scored 26 points in the opening half.
The Aggies had success early finding Porshneva down low as the freshman poured in 16 first-half points on 8 of 10 shooting. As a team the Aggies shot 81 percent in the half, made all seven three-point attempts, yet trailed by four at the intermission. The biggest factor in the Broncos lead was on the boards, where they held a 17-5 edge, including a 12-0 advantage at the offensive end. That resulted in 18 second-chance points for Pomona in the first half alone.
The second half was much the same as the Aggies could not keep Pomona off the boards. The Broncos opened up a double-digit lead five minutes into the half and never looked back. Brandi Fletcher scored 10 consecutive points during one stretch and Allen remained hot, reaching 40 points in the contest with four minutes left to play.
UC Davis continued to shoot the ball well from the field, but second-chance opportunities hurt the Aggies. Pomona attacked the boards all night and it resulted in 26 offensive rebounds, producing 37 second-chance points compared to just six for UC Davis.
"We got pounded on the offensive boards all night," said Aggie head coach Sandy Simpson. "We could not keep them off the boards and they shot the ball well, that's not a good formula for us.
"It's another learning experience for us," Simpson continued. "When a team is as aggressive as Pomona you have to dig deeper. The officials are always going to give the more aggressive team the benefit of the doubt."
Porshneva finished the night with team-highs of 25 points and five rebounds to lead UC Davis. Jennifer Decuir added 19 points, 11 in the second half. Kim Omer added 18 as the Aggies shot 56 percent from the field, 61 percent from three-point range, and 88 percent from the charity stripe.
Allen's 40 points led five Bronco players in double figures. Brandi Fletcher added 24 points and 10 rebounds, eight on the offensive end, while Keila Beachem contributed 14 points and seven boards. Pomona shot 53 percent on the night, missing just 35 shots and pulling down 26 offensive rebounds on those misses. The 109 points by Pomona sets an Aggie school record for most points by an opponent.
UC Davis will return to Recreation Hall next Friday when it hosts Cal State Stanislaus. Gametime is set for 6 p.m.
