DAVIS, Calif. - Alyson Doherty'sdouble-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds helped lead UC Davis on Thursday night but Cal State Northridge countered with three players in double figures as the visiting Matadors held on to beat the Aggies 56-52 in the Big West Conference women's basketball opener for both teams at The Pavilion.

Junior guard Kelsey Harris added a team-high 12 points - all of them coming on three-pointers - and junior Sydnee Fippspitched in with 11 points and seven rebounds for UC Davis which fell to 5-9 overall. Doherty's double-double was the second of her career while her 11 boards tied a career high set last season against Santa Clara on Dec. 16, 2012. She finished 5-of-10 from the floor to go with three assists in 33 minutes.

"I think the key is that it was a very evenly matchead game and we're right there," Head Coach Jennifer Grosssaid. "Obviously, we would have loved to come away with the win, but our goals are still very much intact. I really believe in this team."

Cinnamon Lister had 15 points, Janae Sharpe had 14, and Ashlee Guay added 12 for Northridge, which improved to 5-10. Camille Mahlknecht grabbed 10 rebounds.

Trailing by 11 points at the break, the Aggies exploded out of the gates to begin the second half, using a 12-2 run over the first six minutes of the period to close to within a single point at 37-36 with 14:18 to go. Back-to-back baskets by the Matadors increased their lead to five before senior Idit Oryon buried a three-pointer and sophomore Molly Greubelrattled another home on a drive to tie the game at 41-41 with just under nine minutes to go.

UC Davis remained within striking distance, but could not find the go-ahead basket, as Harris nailed her fourth three-pointer of the game with 3:40 to bring the Aggies to within one once again, 48-47. That would be as close as the home team would get the rest of the way as seven-straight points by Cal State Northridge broke it open and the two teams traded free throws the rest of the way en route to the final score.

In a first half of runs, the Aggies opened the game strong, scoring the first eight points of the contest on a jumper by sophomore Heidi Johnsonand back-to-back three-pointers from Fipps and Harris before the Matadors found a groove. Northridge answered with a 12-2 burst of its own to take its first lead of the game -- an advantage that grew to as many as 10 points just past the eight-minute mark of the period.

A three-pointer by junior Brianna Salvatorestarted an 8-0 run for the Aggies that brought them back to within a pair at 24-22 with 5:45 to go in the half, but that's when the offense got sidetracked, held without a field goal for the remainder of the period (and without a point for the final 3:40) as the Matadors, who shot 50 percent (14-of-28) from the floor in the first, closed the half on an 11-2 run en route to a 35-24 halftime lead.

Cal State Northridge shot just over 41 percent from the field to UC Davis' 34 percent and held a, 39-30, advantage on the glass for the game.

The Aggies return to the court on Saturday (Jan. 11) at 2 p.m. as they play host to Long Beach State to close out their season-long five-game homestand. The 49ers (9-6, 1-0) rallied for an 84-75 overtime win over UC Irvine to tip-off their Big West Conference schedule on Friday night.

NOTES:With her "and one" at the final buzzer, Fipps reached double figures for the sixth consecutive game and the 12th time in 14 games this season... Harris was in double figures for the 10th time this season, scoring nine of her team-high 12 points in the second half... Doherty's double-double was the fifth by an Aggie this season (Fipps - 2, Marfone - 1).
