Aggies Take Battle Of UC's With Win Over Tritons

Jan. 16, 2004

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Jessica Campbell posted her third-straight double-double and the Aggies held off a late Triton rally as UC Davis defeated UC San Diego 73-68 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association women's basketball game Friday night at RIMAC Arena.

With the win the Aggies improve to 9-4 on the season, 4-3 in CCAA play. UC San Diego goes to 7-5 on the season, 3-4 in conference action.

UC Davis held a 10-point lead with five minutes remaining in the game following two jumpers from Campbell, the last a three-pointer. Ellen Porshneva extended the lead to 12 30 seconds later, the biggest lead since the opening minute of the half. UC San Diego responded with an 8-0 run over the next three minutes, cutting the lead to four at 68-64. The Tritons would get no closer as the Aggies kept it a two possession game the rest of the way.

"There is something to be said for winning when you are not at your best and that's what we did tonight," said Aggie head coach Sandy Simpson. "We played well in the first half at both ends with the exception of a six-minute stretch late in the period. In the second half (UC San Diego) were a little more aggressive than we were. But we were able to keep the lead thanks to some big baskets.

"This win allows us to really focus on Grand Canyon tomorrow night," Simpson continued. "We are going to have to play better tomorrow night, but I think we are capable of that."

After the teams traded early baskets, the Aggies jumped out to a 14-5 lead in the first five minutes. UC Davis took advantage of the three Triton scoring droughts in the first half to push the lead into double digits.

UC Davis led 30-15 with just under nine minutes remaining in the half before enduring its own scoreless streak. The Aggies went the next 5:40 without a point as the Tritons cut the lead to 31-25 with 3:25 left. Triton center Margaret Johnson scored six straight points to start the run.

Jessica Campbell led the way for the Aggies in the first half as the freshman from nearby San Marcos posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards in the opening 20 minutes. She had four points as the Aggies closed out the half with an 11-2 run over the final 3:05.

Campbell finished the night with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Jennifer Decuir added a game-high 18 points and nine assists. Kim Omer added 14 for the Aggies.

UC San Diego was led by ali ginn's 17 points, while Margaret Johnson and Stacy Gallagher-Bolton each added point-rebound double-doubles for the Tritons.

UC Davis will next be in action on Saturday when it travels to Phoenix to face Grand Canyon University in a CCAA contest. Gametime is set for 5 p.m. PST.
