TURLOCK, Calif. - Sarah Allen scored a game-high 18 points and the Aggies connected on all eight of their free throws in the final minute as UC Davis ran its winning streak to four games with a 76-69 victory over Cal State Stanislaus in a California Collegiate Athletic Association women's game in front of 791 Friday evening at Warrior Arena.
With the victory the Aggies improve to 8-4 on the season, 4-3 in CCAA play while the Warriors fall to 7-5, 4-3 in conference action.
Stanislaus post Shannon Donnelly opened the game with an easy basket in the paint and it would be the last Warrior lead of the game. UC Davis took an early 4-2 lead following two Jennifer Decuir free throws and never looked back. It was a balanced half for the Aggies as seven different players scored, including 10 by Allen.
Neither team could pull away until late in the half when the Aggies opened up a little breathing room. With the score tied at 24-24 at the 6:44 mark, UC Davis scored the next 10 points over a three-minute span to take its biggest lead of the half. Allen and Colleen Turnbull each scored four points in the run, the final two free throws by Allen gaving her 800 career points.
Stanislaus would close out the half on an 8-2 run over the final three minutes to narrow the halftime deficit to one at 36-35.
The Aggies opened the second half on a 6-0 run to take the lead by to six. Each UC Davis run was answered, however, as the Warriors never let the game get out of hand. And they did it with the benefit of the three-point shot. The Warriors hit six trey's at opportune times in the half to keep the Aggies within striking range. Ruby Webb hit two from long range, the last cutting the lead to five with just over three minutes remaining.
Warrior post Aprile Powell, one of the CCAA's leading scorers and rebounders, was held in check for most of the night, but her running jumper with 2:39 left cut the Aggie lead to three at 66-63.
The Warriors elected to foul with under a minute and trailing by three, putting Kim Omer at the line. Omer, the leading free throw shooting in the CCAA, hit both attempts to push the lead back to five. The game grew in intensity during the final minute as Alicia Coppola hit two three-pointers and the Aggies continued to hit their free throws, keeping the margin at three with just over 17 seconds left.
Stanislaus would have another attempt to tie the game, but Coppola's running jumper went long and Jackie Turpin corralled the rebound, securing the win.
For the half the Aggies made 16-17 free throws and despite shooting just 33 percent from the field, kept the Warriors at bay.
"This was a very big win for us, a great team win," said Aggie Head Coach Sandy Simpson. "We have been playing with a lot more confidence in our last four games and we are at a point where we expect to play well each time we step on the floor. The players trust each other and it is showing with our unselfish play.
"I thought Sarah and Colleen did a great job battling their post players tonight," Simpson continued. "Defensively we forced a lot of turnovers and hit our free throws down the stretch."
In addition to her 18 points, Allen grabbed nine rebounds and had two blocks. Turnbull finished with 15 points and nine boards, while Omer added 17 points, five rebounds and five steals.
Stanislaus was led by Ruby Webb's 16 points, while Nadiya Aziz added 12 and Donnelly finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Coppola ended her night with 11 points and five boards.
UC Davis will next be in action on Saturday when it travels to Bakersfield for a matchup against the CCAA-leading Roadrunners. Gametime is set for 5:30pm.
