DAVIS, Calif. -- Junior Morgan Bertsch finished with a game-high 23 points and senior Pele Gianotti added 21 more, leading a trio of Aggies in double figures and keeping UC Davis unbeaten in Big West Conference play thanks to a, 67-53, win over Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday night at The Pavilion.
The Aggies won their 16th consecutive league regular season contest, improving to 16-3 overall and a perfect 6-0 in conference play. The No. 8-ranked mid-major program in the nation according to CollegeInsider.com improved to 8-1 at home and 6-0 in the month of January with the victory, shooting 46 percent from the field.
The Titans fell to 7-12 overall and 2-4 in league play, getting a team-high 12 points from Hannah Thompson on a quartet of three-pointers, and a 10-point, 14-rebound double-double by Daeja Smith.
Bertsch, a biomedical engineering major, hit 11-of-21 from the field en route to her 10th 20-point game of the year, tied for the second highest total in a single season in the program's Division I history, and collected the 29th such performance of her career, trailing only Sydnee Fipps (32) in that category.
The Santa Rosa, Calif., native also blocked four shots to give her 123 for her career, moving her into third on the all-time list. She added a career-high tying four steals in just 26 minutes.
Gianotti, a political science major, was an efficient 6-of-7 from the field and 8-of-8 from the line en route to her season-high total, logging her first 20-point game of the season and the seventh of her career. The Myrtle Creek, Ore., native surpassed her previous high of 18 points at Pacific on Nov. 20, and moved into sole possession of 18th on the all-time scoring list with 1,040 points.
Nagel, a psychology major, joined the duo in double figures with 11 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to boot, inching her closer to the 1,000-point milestone. She enters Saturday's contest against UC Santa Barbara with 932 points with 10 regular season contests remaining.
UC Davis led wire-to-wire, tied up for only 79 seconds of game time and leading by as many as 17 points late in the fourth quarter. Fullerton, which trailed by as few as three points with 2:33 remaining in the third period, saw the Aggies close the quarter on a 7-0 run over the final 2:11 for a 10-point advantage, and the UC Davis defense locked down the Titans from there.
Cal State Fullerton was held to without a field goal over the final 8:34 of the fourth quarter, finishing 0-for-11 from the floor in the process, as the Aggies limited the Titans to just five free throws after a Jade Vega three-pointer made it a nine-point contest at, 57-48. Fullerton finished shooting just under 39 percent from the field for the game.
Junior psychology major Kourtney Eaton finished with two assists to break a tie with Laura Manning and move her into fifth on the all-time list with 341
With an extra day to prepare, UC Davis doesn't return to the court until Saturday (Jan. 27) as the Aggies host UC Santa Barbara in a quick rematch with the Gauchos at 2:30 p.m. It will be the first game of a doubleheader with the UC Davis men's team, which hosts Cal Poly later that evening.
