Gators Snap Series Streak With Win Over Aggies

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Cristal Fernandez and Renee Jimenez each scored 19 points and the Gators snapped a 38-game losing streak to the Aggies as San Francisco State defeated UC Davis, 74-53, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association women's game Friday night at Main Gym.

With the loss the Aggies fall to 13-8 on the season, 8-7 in CCAA play. The Gators even their record at 10-10 overall, 6-9 in conference action.

The Gators took the lead for good just over one minute into the game and never looked back. San Francisco State capitalized on 17 Aggie turnovers in the first half to build as much as a 12-point lead before taking an eight-point lead into intermission. The 17 UC Davis turnovers led to 19 Gator points as the Aggies could not match San Francisco's intensity. The Gators controlled the paint, outscoring UC Davis 16-4 down low in the opening 20 minutes.

In the second half San Francisco pushed the lead to 14 in the first few minutes and the lead remained in double figures the rest of the way. Leading by 14 midway through the half, the Gators put the game away with a 20-5 run over the next six minutes to hold a 29-point, their biggest of the game with 5:44 to play.

UC Davis never got on track as it struggled to find its shooting touch. The Aggies connected on just 38 percent of its shots and only 19 percent from three-point range. Conversely, the Gators hit 50 percent of their shots from beyond the arc and 46 percent from the field.

Ellen Porshneva led UC Davis with 10 points, the only Aggie in double figures. Jackie Turpin had four points and a team-high seven rebounds while Jennifer Decuir finished with eight points. UC Davis committed 28 turnovers on the night, their second-highest total this season. The 28 miscues led to 26 Gator points on the night while the 53 total points was an Aggie season-low.

 

 

In addition to Fernandez and Jimenez, Chrissy Ridenour added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Alex Brady finished with 10 points, seven boards and two blocks as the Gators earned their first win over UC Davis since the 1984-85 season.

UC Davis will next be in action on Saturday when faces Sonoma State in a CCAA road contest. Gametime is set for 5:30 p.m.
