SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Kamesha Bell posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, and the Coyotes took advantage of an eight-minute Aggie scoring drought late in the game as Cal State, San Bernardino defeated UC Davis, 53-36, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association women's game in front of 685 Saturday evening at Coussoulis Arena.
With the loss the Aggies drop their third straight contest and fall to 13-8 on the season, 9-7 in CCAA play. CSUSB improves to 14-7, 10-6 in conference action.
Trailing by 11 near the midpoint of the second half, UC Davis went on an 8-0 run over the next four minutes to cut the Coyote lead to three at 34-31, with 11:01 left. Angela Cannady's three-pointer stopped the Aggie run and sparked the Coyotes to a 12-0 run of their own. It ran concurrent with an Aggie scoring drought that lasted 8:01 as San Bernardino increased its lead to 46-31, with 3:00 left. Sarah Allen's layup with 2:27 left finally broke the dry spell, but it would be too late for UC Davis as CSUSB had the game in control, leading by 14 at that point.
The Coyotes ended the game on a 20-5 run over the final 11:01, marking the second straight contest of holding their opponents to under 40 points following Friday's 62-33 victory over Chico State. It was also the lowest scoring output for UC Davis since early in the 1994-95 season, when they managed just 35 points in a 47-35 loss, also at Cal State, San Bernardino.
"We gave up too many three's early on, but defensively we were okay," said Aggie Head Coach Sandy Simpson. "Offensively, we were out of sync all night and give San Bernardino credit for that. We gave away too many scoring opportunities when we had good looks. We just need to be more aggressive offensively."
The first half saw the Coyotes make the first basket of the game and they would not surrender the lead the remainder of the half. It was the long ball that propelled San Bernardino to a double-digit lead. They connected for five in the opening 20 minutes compared to none for the Aggies. Allen tried to keep the game close as she scored seven points in the half, connecting on three of her four shots.
UC Davis could not string together any sort of run in the half. They would shot just 38 percent in the period as the Coyotes entered halftime with a 29-18 lead.
For the game Allen led UC Davis with 19 points, the only Aggie in double figures. She added five rebounds while Kim Omer added six points, eight boards and one assist while playing all 40 minutes. Colleen Turnbull added four points and eight boards for the Aggies, which managed just 28.6 percent shooting on the night.
In addition to Bell. Sequoia Williams added 11 points and eight rebounds. Amanda Fitzgerald led all players with six assists.
UC Davis will next be in action on Friday when it hosts Cal State Bakersfield at Rec Hall. Gametime is set for 6pm.
