DAVIS, Calif. — UC Davis senior Rachel Nagel became the 20th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points on an “and one” with six minutes remaining in the game, and sophomore Nina Bessolo finished with a team-high 13 points to lead four players in double figures, helping lift the Aggies to a, 79-49, victory over Long Beach State on Thursday night in front of 1,012 fans at The Pavilion.
Winning for the 13th consecutive time at home against league opponents, UC Davis improved to 21-4 overall and 11-1 in Big West play, shooting 50 percent from the floor overall and an 83 percent clip (10-for-12) in the fourth quarter.
The 49ers, who got a game-high 17 points and eight rebounds from Cecily Wilson, fell to 3-22 overall and 1-10 in league play.
Needing just eight points to hit the milestone in the penultimate home game of the season, Nagel reentered the game with 6:21 to play and immediately went to work, driving down the right side and sinking the basket while drawing contact. Nagel completed the three-point play and finished with nine points on the night, leaving to a standing ovation from fans and teammates alike.
Bessolo finished 5-of-7 from the field — including a trio of three-pointers — en route to her team-high total, tying her season high set at Southern Utah on Nov. 24. Senior political science major Pele Gianotti added her second double-double of the season (and the seventh of her career) with 11 points and 11 rebounds — the latter just one off her career high — while junior Morgan Bertsch finished with 12 points, extending her streak to 25 consecutive games with double-digit points.
After spotting Long Beach State the first five points of the game, the Aggies railed off 10 consecutive points, taking their first lead on a Bessolo three-pointer from the left side with just over four minutes to play in the period. A back-and-forth start to the second quarter saw the 49ers regain the advantage on a three by Naomi Hunt, but it was short-lived as Nagel answered with a three on UC Davis’ next trip down the court, sparking a 9-0 run and the Aggies never looked back.
UC Davis outscored Long Beach State, 13-4, in the final six-and-a-half minutes of the quarter and poured it on after the break, scoring the first 10 points of the period to build an 18-point advantage. The Aggies outscored the 49ers, 29-12, in the fourth, scoring 13 of the first 14 points in the quarter and cruising from there.
The defense clamped down late as UC Davis limited Long Beach State to just 32 percent from the field for the game — including just 3-of-12 in the fourth quarter — and out-rebounded the 49ers, 38-31, for the game. The Aggies finished with at least four players in double figures for the eighth time this season (winning all eight), while remaining unbeaten on Thursday nights, improving to 8-0.
With a three-game homestand now behind it, UC Davis closes out the week on the road, heading to Honolulu to take on Hawai’i on Saturday (Feb. 17) at 9 p.m. PT.
