Bates Scores 22 As Aggies Win Fifth Straight, 82-55

DAVIS, Calif. - Heather Bates scored 22 points, Jessica Campbell added 18 and Hayee Donaghe tallied 16 as UC Davis pulled away from Cal State Fullerton in the first half for an 82-55 Big West Conference women's basketball win before 895 fans at The Pavilion on Saturday night.

The Aggies pushed their winning streak to five games, improving their overall record to 15-9 and their third-place league mark to 9-3. Cal State Fullerton, which was paced by nine points each from Toni Thomas and Ashley Richie fell to 8-16 overall and 6-6 in the Big West. UC Davis swept the season series from Cal State Fullerton, winning the pair by an average of 29.5 points.

UC Davis trailed 16-12 near the midway point of the first half after taking an early 7-0 lead but was able to withstand pressure from the Titans and eventually take a lead that would grow to 45-28 at halftime. Campbell was a big part of the Aggies' first-half surge, scoring all 18 of her points before intermission. She was 7 of 11 from the field, including hitting her only three-point attempt. Donaghe also had a strong opening 20 minutes, hitting a pair of treys and scoring 10 points.

A 13-2 run after trailing 16-12 gave UC Davis a 25-18 lead with 6:36 left while a layup from Bates four minutes later helped the Aggies go up 36-25. The lead eventually grew to 17 points at halftime after two free throws from Campbell and a layup from Commins in the final minute.

The Aggies used solid shooting to help gain the big lead, making 19 of 33 (57.6 percent) in the first half while collecting 15 assists.

UC Davis took a 51-31 lead with 16:43 to go after another Bates layup while her lay-in with 7:50 to go gave the Aggies a 71-44 advantage. The Titans got to within 73-53 down the stretch but UC Davis didn't let them get any closer.

"We did a really good job finishing today," said Aggie coach Sandy Simpson. "I was pleased with our efficiency."



Cal State Fullerton, which lost 77-45 to UC Davis last month, shot 39.3 percent from the field and committed 25 turnovers. Toni Thomas, the Big West's leading scorer, was held to just nine points, eight below her season average of 17.1 ppg. Daviyonn Weathersby had five assists to pace the Titans while Alison Bennett had eight rebounds.

UC Davis, which shot 58.9 percent from the floor, had 25 assists on 33 baskets including seven for guard Anna Harp. Campbell and Bates each added four while Donaghe picked up four of the Aggies' 14 steals. UC Davis, ranked ninth nationally in free throw percentage, went 11 of 12 from the stripe.

The Aggies will return to the road looking to extend a four-game winning streak away from The Pavilion when they visit Cal Poly on Thursday at 7 p.m. UC Davis will play at league-leader UC Santa Barbara next Saturday.
