NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Ashlee Guay went the length of the floor and made a layup an instant before the final buzzer, erasing Blair Shinoda's heroics five seconds earlier that tied it, as host Cal State Northridge edged UC Davis 51-49 in a Big West Conference women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Alyson Doherty scored 15 points and Sydnee Fipps added 10 for the Aggies who had a 45-37 lead late in the game before the Matadors rallied with a 14-4 run down the stretch to win. UC Davis dropped to 10-14 overall and 5-8 in the Big West while Northridge improved to 13-12 overall and 7-6 in the league while splitting the regular-season season with the Aggies.
The Aggies led 47-46 late in the game, but the Matadors' Breeyon Alexander hit a three-pointer from the left wing with 30 seconds left to give Northridge a two-point lead. Molly Gruebel's three-point attempt from the right side went in and out but the game's 12th jump ball stayed with UC Davis with 10 seconds left.
Shinoda took it from there, driving from the top of the key down the right side to lay it in with four seconds left that tied the game, 49-49. After a timeout, Guay took the inbounds pass up the right side and raced to the hoop, releasing the ball just prior to the final buzzer. The officials reviewed the play on the courtside monitor before calling it good.
"We played extremely hard and defended well today," said Aggie coach Jennifer Gross. "It's tough to lose at the buzzer but we know the game doesn't come down to one play. There are some areas we can clean up, so we will keep working hard to improve. Our goal is to be playing our best basketball in the next few weeks."
It was a tough ending for UC Davis which led by as many as eight points in the first half and never trailed by more than four. The Aggies struggled from the floor, shooting just 21 percent in the second half (5 of 24) and 29 percent (14 of 49) for the game. Another strong day from the free throw line (17 of 24) helped them forge leads and overcome a 54-41 deficit on the boards.
Celia Marfone scored twice inside, Fipps had two free throws and Idit Oryon finger-rolled a layup as UC Davis jumped to an early 8-0 lead. However, Northridge battled back with 11 straight of its own for an 11-8 lead five minutes in. Gruebel's trey a little later made it 18-13. With UC Davis in front 18-16, both teams went scoreless for six minutes and were tied twice more before the Matadors took a 27-26 halftime lead.
Fipps and Marfone scored inside and Shinoda nailed a three-pointer as the Aggies scored eight straight to break a 37-37 tie midway through the second half to lead 45-37 with 4:39 to go. Northridge countered with seven straight to close to 45-44 while Fipps' free throws with 1:18 to go gave UC Davis a 47-44 lead.
Guay's layup made it a one-point game before White's trey put the Matadors up 49-47 with a half-minute to play, setting up the exciting finish.
Fipps added nine rebounds for the Aggies while Doherty, who was 5 of 6 from the floor, added eight. Camille Mahlknecht had 10 boards for Northridge which held a 21-7 advantage on the offensive glass.
UC Davis' defense limited the Matadors to just 31 percent from the floor. The Matadors struggled from the line, making just 1 of 8.
The Aggies return home on Thursday to face UC Riverside at 7 p.m. before hosting Cal State Fullerton on Saturday at 4 p.m.
