DAVIS, Calif. -
Kimberly Smith scored a career-high 24 points and sophomore Jessica Campbell posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds on Saturday night as UC Davis won consecutive games for the first time this season with an 81-71 nonconference women's basketball win before 502 fans at The Pavilion.
UC Davis, which beat Cal Poly last Monday to begin its season-ending five-game homestand, is 8-16 after its second straight win. UC Irvine, which was led by 24 points from forward Angie Ned, fell to 4-19. Besides Smith and Campbell, the Aggies also got double-figure scoring from Ellen Porshneva who had 17 points and guard Jackie Turpin who finished with 16. Lara Gray had 10 rebounds for UC Davis.
UC Davis trailed 32-31 at halftime but took the lead for good at 54-52 on a three-pointer from Smith with 10 minutes, 41 seconds left. The Aggies had their biggest lead at 75-63 with 1:30 remaining.
Center Ashley Biggins scored 12 points and had nine rebounds for UC Irvine. UC Davis beat the Anteaters for the second time this season after taking a come-from-behind 76-73 win in Irvine on Dec. 11.
Smith hit 10 of 16 shots for her 24 points, including four three-pointers. She added five assists, four rebounds and a steal. Her previous career-high was 18 points, which she most recently had on Monday against Cal Poly.
"She just played a very poised game at both ends of the floor," said UC Davis coach Sandy Simpson. "But it's the offense that stands out."
UC Davis trailed early in the game before taking a 12-10 lead on a layup from Porshneva at the 13:28 mark. The Aggies continued to open their lead, going up by nine points on a pair of occassions, the last one coming at 29-21 with 3:30 left before halftime. However, the Anteaters closed the gap the rest of the way, taking the intermission lead with three seconds on the clock after a jumper by Ned.
The Aggies posted a pair of three-pointers in the first half, the first one coming from Smith just past the midway point. That trey gave UC Davis 145 for the season, breaking the school record of 144 set last season.
After taking the halftime lead, UC Irvine didn't trail until Smith's three-pointer that put UC Davis in front 54-52. The Anteaters led by as many as five points prior to that point while the teams were tied four times. The Aggies didn't relinquish the lead the remainder of the game.
UC Davis shot 58 percent (15 of 26) from the field in the second half and finished the game with a 41-31 advantage on the boards.
Turpin was 12 of 14 from the line for most of her 16-point effort, while also grabbing six rebounds. Campbell had three assists and two steals to go with her 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Ned converted 10 of 18 shots to pace the Anteaters, scoring 15 points in the first half on 7-of-11 shooting. Guard Melissa Jacob had a game-high nine assists while foward Lauren Yadon had three blocks.
UC Davis' 81 points on Saturday night are a season-high.
The Aggies return to action on Monday when they host Long Beach State at 7 p.m. at The Pavilion.
