DAVIS, Calif. - Krisztina Fuleki scored a game-high 27 points and hit two critical three-pointers in overtime as Cal State Northridge spoiled UC Davis' 16-point comeback in the second half for a 76-68 nonconference women's basketball win before 959 at The Pavilion on Saturday night.
The Aggies dropped to 8-18 overall with only Monday's matchup against Pacific remaining on the schedule while Cal State Northridge improved to 17-8. Jessica Campbell scored 24 points to lead UC Davis while guard Jackie Turpin tallied a career-high 22, including scoring the tying bucket with 4.5 seconds left in regulation which forced the extra period.
Forward LaJoyce King posted 19 rebounds to go with 11 points for the Matadors, who owned a decisive 54-28 advantage on the boards.
UC Davis trailed 63-61 in overtime before Fuleki's fourth trey of the game - this one from the corner adjacent to the Matadors' bench - gave Cal State Northridge a five-point lead with 1:28 left. Kimberly Smith answered with a three-pointer for the Aggies but Fuleki responded with another long distance shot from the same spot as her previous one and put the Matadors up 71-66 with :45 left.
UC Davis was forced to foul down the stretch and could not make up the difference.
The overtime defeat spoiled a big rally in the second half by the Aggies, who trailed by 16 points on a pair of occassions, the final time coming at 47-31 with 11:05 to play. But an 18-3 run, keyed by a pair of three-point plays from Campbell and Turpin, and a trey from Lara Gray, enabled the UC Davis to slice the lead to just 50-49 with 4:27 to go.
Cal State Northridge held off the Aggies until the final minute. Fuleki missed the second of two free throws with :34 left and, trailing 55-53, UC Davis worked for a tying or go-ahead basket. Campbell just missed on a three-pointer with :12 on the clock but the Aggies got the rebound. Following a 30-second timeout, UC Davis looked to Turpin inside and she took the inbounds pass from Smith and scored to tie the game.
The Aggies led early in the extra period after Ellen Porshneva's jumper but Cal State Northridge took the lead for good at 61-59 on a layup from King with just over three minutes to go and the Matadors wouldn't trail the rest of the way.
UC Davis led by as many as seven points in the first half but Cal State Northridge rallied for a 21-20 lead which it extended to 30-22 at halftime. The Matadors also held a huge 30-9 lead on the boards through the first 20 minutes.
Besides scoring a career-high in points, Turpin tied a career-best with seven steals and also had five assists. Campbell hit 9 o f 24 shots to help her 24-point effort. Smith scored 11 points and had four assists.
Fuleki was 5-of-9 from three-point territory and 10 of 16 overall while King had eight of her rebounds on the offensive end. She also had six assists. Forward Heather Cushing added 14 points for Cal State Northridge, which had 24 offensive rebounds among its 54 total boards.
UC Davis will host Pacific in its season finale at 7 p.m. on Monday night at The Pavilion.
