SAN LUIS OBISPO, Cailf. -- Celia Marfone finished with a double-double of 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, but it was her three-pointer with 1:21 reminaing that gave UC Davis the lead for good as the visiting Aggies posted a 77-69 upset of Big West co-leader Cal Poly on Thursday night at the Mott Athletics Center in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Alyson Doherty added a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds and Sydnee Fipps poured in 23 more as UC Davis improved to 12-14 overall and 7-6 in league play. The Mustangs, who had won five-straight against the Aggies in San Luis Obispo, fell to 15-12 overall and 9-5 in conference play, falling for the fourth time in its last five outings.
The second of three-consecutive three-pointers by Beth Balbierz had UC Davis in a five-point hole, but the Aggies would rally. Back-to-back three-pointers by Fipps and Kelsey Harris -- the latter her first points of the game -- gave the visitors the lead, but Balbierz nailed another trey from the top of the key that put Cal Poly ahead, 67-65, with 3:09 to play.
That would be the last time the Mustangs would hold the lead. After the two teams traded misses from beyond the arc, Marfone hoisted up the game-winner from the left corner with 1:24 to play and the Aggies ran away from there. Marfone added an "and one" on UC Davis' next trip down the court and the Aggies hit their next six-straight from the line as part of an 18-5 burst over the final four minutes while the defense held Cal Poly to just 1-of-6 from the field in the final minute en route to the win.
The double-double was Marfone's second of the season, as the sophomore surpassed her previous career high on the boards of 10 set at Hofstra earlier this year. Doherty logged her third double-double of the year and her fourth 20-point performance of the season, hitting 8-of-14 from the field including only her second three-pointer of the season -- her first since San Francisco on Nov. 29 her in San Luis Obispo.
Fipps finished 6-of-13 from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 from the line, logging her sixth 20-point game in her last seven and moving past Colleen Turnbull (1999-03) into 10th place on the school's career scoring list. She needs just four more points to pass both Lisa Jo Kellogg (1988-91) and current UC Davis Head Coach Jennifer Gross for eighth all-time.
Ariana Elegado scored a team-high 22 points -- including six three-pointers -- to lead three Mustangs in double figures, but was held to just five points in the second half. Jonae Ervin (16) and Molly Schlemer (10) also finished in double figures for Cal Poly, which went to the line just six times compared to 22 for the Aggies.
UC Davis fell behind early as the Mustangs ran out to an 8-0 lead and built an advantage of as many as 13 points with just under 13 minutes to play in the opening half. Cal Poly led by 12 two minutes later before the Aggies clamped down and found a groove offensively. Heidi Johnson nailed a three-pointer to kick-start a 10-0 run that eventually ballooned into a 17-3 burst as Marfone capped the run with a basket inside to give UC Davis its first lead, 28-26, with 4:23 to play.
The Mustangs recovered, however, scoring eight of the final nine points to carry a five-point, 34-29, lead into the locker room at the break.
The Aggies close out their final road trip of the season on Saturday (March 1) at 2 p.m., taking on UC Santa Barbara at The Thunderdome.
NOTES: The 12 wins overall and seven Big West Conference victories for the Aggies in 2013-14 match their win totals for all of last season (12-18, 7-11) with three regular season games remaining... UC Davis' eight-point win at Cal Poly on Thursday marked its sixth-straight game decided by single digits... Fipps' 23 points against the Mustangs gave her 472 for the season, supplanting Staci Stevens (463 points in 1986-87) as the highest-scoring junior in the history of the program... Kelsey Harris' two three-pointers against Cal Poly on Thursday gave her 73 for the season, passing Kimberly Smith for third on the UC Davis single-season list... Harris needs three to tie Lori Hurlbut (1999) for second and eight to match the single-season mark of 81 set by Karen Boisvert in 1991... Alyson Doherty's two blocks against Cal Poly gave her 30 for the season and 57 for her career, matching Jessica Campbell (2003-06, 2007-08) for ninth on the all-time list -- just seven back of Kari Sivesind (1992-96) for eighth... Doherty's 30 blocks this season also rank tied with Paige Mintun (2008-09) for ninth on the single-season list, just four back of Staci Stevens (1986-87) for eighth and five behind Mintun (2009-10) for seventh).
