SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- UC Davis junior Sydnee Fipps finished with game high's of 18 points and eight rebounds to pace three Aggies in double figures and the visitors led wire-to-wire Saturday afternoon en route to a 65-47 win over host UC Santa Barbara in a Big West Conference women's basketball match-up at The Thunderdome.
UC Davis improved to 13-14 overall and 8-6 in league play, winning its third-straight game and posting its second three-game winning streak of the season, while sweeping the regular season series from UCSB. The Gauchos lost for the fourth time in their last five games, falling to 8-19 overall and 3-11 in the Big West.
Fipps hit on 5-of-11 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the line to lead all players, passing former Aggie greats Lisa Jo Kellogg (1988-91), Jennifer Gross (1993-97), and Kari Sivesind (1992-96), for seventh on the all-time scoring list with 1,158 career points. She needs just 93 more points this season to match Ellen Porshneva (2003-06, 2007-08) for sixth.
Doherty finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, hitting 7-of-15 from the floor, while Greubel was perfect from the field to finish with her 14 points, making 4-of-4 from the field, sinking her only three-point attempt, and adding 5-of-5 from the line for her fifth double-digit scoring game of the season.
Melissa Zornig led the Gauchos with 12 points -- 10 of those coming in the first half -- and Clair Watkins added 11 points before fouling out with just over seven minutes to play in the game.
The Aggies led wire-to-wire, using a pair of big runs that broke the game open early. UC Davis led for all but 24 seconds that the game was tied at two, using a 13-0 run to build a commanding 15-2 lead out of the gate and, later, adding a 9-0 burst, holding UC Santa Barbara to without a point for more than six minutes en route to a 39-25 halftime advantage.
Doherty then scored the first five points out of the locker room to start the second half and the Aggies held the Gauchos to without a point for the first five-plus minutes and without a field goal for the first seven minutes of the period. UC Santa Barbara clawed its way back to within 11 points, but a 10-0 final kick by UC Davis pushed its lead to 22 points with 3:49 to go and the Aggies never looked back.
The Aggies shot 44 percent from the floor -- including a 58 percent clip in the first half -- and out-rebounded the Gauchos, 41-34, for the game. UC Santa Barbara shot 32 percent from the field, including just under 27 percent in the second period.
UC Davis closes out the 2013-14 regular season at home next week, welcoming UC Riverside on Thursday (March 6) and UC Irvine on Saturday (March 8) to The Pavilion.
