DAVIS, Calif. -- A three-pointer by UC Davis junior Kelsey Harris jump-started a 9-0 run midway through the first half to give her team the lead for good and the host Aggies shot 60 percent from the floor in the second half to pull away for a, 78-52, win over visiting UC Riverside on Thursday night in front of 853 fans at The Pavilion.

The victory was a season-best fourth straight for UC Davis, which improved to 14-14 overall and 9-6 in the Big West Conference. The loss dropped the Highlanders to 6-22 overall and 2-13 in league play.

"I thought defensively, tonight, we were exceptional," Head Coach Jennifer Gross said. "No matter which five were on the floor, we were communicating, every possession was important to us, and that's how you're going to win a championship. I feel like we're playing really good basketball both offensively and defensively and its fun to see."

Junior Sydnee Fipps led the way with a game-high 20 points in just 24 minutes to lead a balanced scoring effort from the Aggies, who finished with four players in double figures and got at least two points from 10 of the 11 players who entered the game on the night. Sophomore Celia Marfone, who set a career high with 12 rebounds at Cal Poly last week, did herself three better on Thursday night, setting a new mark with 15 rebounds to lead all players.

Sophomore Alyson Doherty added 12 points and seven rebounds, sophomore Molly Greubel finished with 12 more points on another perfect night from the floor (4-for-4 overall, 3-for-3 from the line) to go with five rebounds, and senior Idit Oryon dropped in 11 points in 15 minutes off the bench on 4-of-5 from the field.

Simone DeCoud led UC Riverside with 17 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, while playing in all 40 minutes.

UC Davis, which nearly led the entire game, jumped out by as many as seven points early before a 12-4 run -- capped by a pair of free throws by Kiara Harewood -- gave the Highlanders their first lead since the 17:42 mark at 17-16 with 8:44 to play. A three-pointer by Harris stopped the bleeding and regained the lead for the Aggies, but DeCoud tied things up at 19 apiece with a floater in the lane with 7:26 to play.

That would be the closest UC Riverside would come the rest of the way as Harris drained her second three-pointer of the game 20 seconds later and UC Davis was off to the races. Fipps and Doherty each contributed points during the run to break the game open before Annelise Ito ended an almost four-minute drought for the Highlanders and the Aggies carried a six-point, 32-26 lead into the locker room at the break.

UC Davis picked up where it left off to open the second half, using an 11-2 run over the first six minutes of the period to build a 15-point lead and the Aggies never looked back. UCR got no closer than 12 points with 9:38 to play as UC Davis outscored the Highlanders, 26-12 over the final 8:26 -- including a run of 10 consecutive points over a three-minute span -- to ice the victory.

The Aggies return to The Pavilion on Saturday (March 8) at 2 p.m., hosting UC Irvine in the final regular season contest of 2013-14. The Anteaters held off Cal State Fullerton, 78-72, on Thursday night.

NOTES: Marfone's 15 rebounds were just three shy of the Aggies' single-game top 10 and just seven off the single-game record held by Kendall Greene, who grabbed 22 rebounds vs. Humboldt State on March 3, 1995… Harris' two three-pointers moved her past Lori Hurlbut into second place on the school's single-season chart with 77, needing four more to match the record of 81 held by Karen Boisvert in 1991… Greubel has not missed a shot (including a free throw) since the 2:47 mark of the second half against Cal Poly on Feb. 27, going a perfect 8-for-8 from the floor, 2-for-2 from three-point range, and 8-for-8 from the line in that span... the Aggies' four-game winning streak is their longest since they won four in a row from Jan. 12-26, 2012… Fipps hit the 20-point mark for the 15th time this season and the 22nd time in her career… the single-season record for 20-point games is 18 by Staci Stevens in 1987-88… the Aggies are at the .500 mark for the first time since Dec. 30, 2012, when they were 5-5 following a loss to Washington… with her 20 points, Fipps posted her second-consecutive 500-point season and collected only the fifth, 500-point season by an Aggie, standing just two points back of the 512 points she scored as a sophomore that ranks third on the single-season list.
