DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis sophomore Alyson Doherty finished with a team-high 20 points and classmate Celia Marfone recorded her third double-digit rebounding performance in her last four games, but visiting UC Irvine used a 12-4 second half run to break open a three-point game and defeat the Aggies, 68-55, on Saturday afternoon at The Pavilion.

The loss snapped UC Davis' four-game winning streak as the Aggies fell to 14-15 overall and 9-7 in Big West Conference play. UC Davis will be the No. 5 seed in next week's Big West Tournament, facing off against either UC Santa Barbara or UC Riverside on Tuesday (March 11) at 6 p.m.

With the victory, the Anteaters improved to 16-14 overall and 9-7 in league play, earning the No. 4 seed and a first-round bye by virtue of sweeping the regular season series from the Aggies. UCI will face the highest remaining seed in the quarterfinals on Wednesday (March 12), approximately 30 minutes following the first game of the day between the No. 3 seed and the lowest remaining seed at 6 p.m.

"If you look at a lot of different categories, we played a pretty even game with (UC Irvine)," Head Coach Jennifer Gross said. "We did a tremendous job on the defensive boards but, for us, to shoot 17 percent from three is abnormal and it was unfortunate. Today, we did a really nice job getting the ball inside, but you have to have both that inside and outside attack. I told our team, we played well, we just didn't make shots."

Doherty finished 9-of-14 from the floor to record her fifth, 20-point game of the season, grabbing seven rebounds, dishing out four assists, and blocking four shots. Her 35 blocks this season move her past Staci Stevens (34 in 1986-87) for eighth place on the school's single-season chart.

Marfone, who grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds in a win over UC Riverside on Thursday night, finished with her third double-double of the season, adding 10 points and 10 rebounds to the Aggies' total, and is averaging 10.8 rebounds per game over her last three games.

Kelly Meggs led UC Irvine with 22 points on 7-of-10 from the field -- including five three-pointers -- whie grabbing five rebounds. Camille Buckley added a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds.

UC Davis jumped out quickly, scoring seven of the first eight points, and leading by as many as eight points on three different occassions -- the last coming at 26-18 with 6:15 to go in the first half. That's when the Anteaters' offense found a groove, closing out the first period on a 13-2 run, capped by a three-pointer by Lauren Spinazze at the buzzer, to carry a 31-28 lead into the locker room at the break.

The UCI run carried over into the second half as Jennifer Tsurumoto drained a three to start the period, but the Aggies continued to chip away, getting four points from Marfone and back-to-back baskets by Molly Greubel and Doherty to make it a three-point game, 39-36, just three minutes in.

That would be the closest UC Davis would get however as Methlyn Onogomuho hit a short jumper to start a string of six-straight points for the Anteaters -- a run that grew to 12-4 over the next four minutes to build an 11-point lead that UC Irvine would not relinquish. The Anteaters led by as many as 13 points with 7:38 to play, holding off the Aggies, who used an 8-3 run to claw back to within six with just under two minutes to go.

Meggs converted a three-point play and added two more from the line, while Buckley also hit two free throws to clinch the win.

UC Davis shot just under 38 percent from the floor for the game, but just 17 percent from beyond the arc in the loss, getting to the line just six times. In comparison, UC Irvine shot 37 percent and made 13-of-19 from the stripe.
