DAVIS, Calif. - Sydnee Fipps registered a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead three Aggies in double-digit scoring as the UC Davis women's basketball team claimed a 78-46 exhibition victory over the University of Redlands on Thursday at The Pavilion in Davis.

Cortney French scored 13 points on 5-of-12 shooting, hitting three treys in the win, while freshman Heidi Johnson nearly recorded a double-double of her own, scoring 11 points and grabbing nine rebounds.

"Every single person on our team has a different role than they've found in the past whether they're a veteran a newcomer, so it was really fun to see our girls to step into new roles and just embrace them," said second-year head coach Jennifer Gross. "I think it was fun for our fans to see the really exciting things this program has coming in the future."

The Bulldogs took an early 9-8 lead until Brianna Salvatore's free throw at the 14:19 mark of the first half sparked an 8-0 run. Redlands pulled to within four briefly, but the Aggies pulled away again after Johnson grabbed an offensive rebound and went back up for the lay up.

French drained a trey to put UC Davis up by nine with 8:30 left in the first half, sparking a 10-0 run as the Aggies held the Bulldogs scoreless for nearly four minutes.

A pair of free throws by freshman Alyson Doherty, who hit 5-of-6 from the line, gave UC Davis its first double-digit lead as the Aggies went up by a 24-13 margin at the 8:01 mark. Blair Shinoda added a layup off a Doherty assist to put UC Davis up by 15. Celia Marfone's fastbreak layup closed the first half as the Aggies took a 40-23 lead into halftime.

"We have some tremendous senior leadership and a team of people that want to improve and are willing to put the time in and work," said Gross. "I was really thrilled with our effort tonight. I thought every single person gave us something unique and played as hard as they could and that's what I was asking of them."

Out of the break, Idit Oryon sank a three, then Fipps' layup kept the Aggies on top by 18 at 48-30 with 16:17 left in the game. Emily Vann added a layup of her own to put UC Davis up by 20 while Fipps hit a layup and a trey with 11:43 to go to increase the Aggie lead to 58-34.

Down the stretch, UC Davis maintained its lead and held Redlands without a field goal for the final 9:29 of the game to claim the 78-46 victory.

The Aggies outscored the Bulldogs in the paint by a 46-8 margin and scored 29 points off of turnovers.

UC Davis officially opens the 2012-13 season on Friday, Nov. 9 in a 7 p.m. matchup against Pepperdine at The Pavilion.
