Final Stats

CEDAR CITY, Utah -- UC Davis junior forward Morgan Bertsch posted her fourth-straight 20-point performance, finishing with a game-high 22, and the visiting Aggies shot just over 52 percent for the game from the field, lifting them to their fifth consecutive victory, 85-59, over Southern Utah on Friday afternoon in Cedar City, Utah.

In improving to 5-0 overall to start the season, UC Davis matches the 2007 and 2011 Aggie squads for the best start in the program's Division I history, and moved just two wins shy of the all-time NCAA era mark of seven set in 1991 and matches in 1994. The win was also the seventh straight on the road for UC Davis dating back to last season.

The Thunderbirds, led by Natalie Sanchez's 20 points off the bench, fell to 1-4 overall with the loss, held to just 33 percent shooting from the field.

Bertsch finished 11-of-18 from the floor en route to her game-high total, surpassing Kasey Riecks (2008-12) for 16th on the school's all-time scoring list and logging her 23rd career 20-point game. Sophomore Nina Bessolo added a season-high 13 points, six rebounds, and three steals, while senior Rachel Nagel collected a game-high 10 rebounds -- her second career double-digit rebounding performance and just one shy of her career high of 11 set against Montana State last season.

It was a one-point game just three minutes in before a three-pointer by senior Dani Nafekh sparked a 9-0 burst that built the Aggies' lead to double digits with 3:04 to play in the opening quarter. UC Davis finished the period on a 17-6 run to lead by 12 at the end of the first 10 minutes and the Aggies never looked back.

Southern Utah was able to claw its way back to within single digits twice in the last five minutes of the second quarter, closing the gap to eight points at 31-23 with three minutes to go in the half, but UC Davis finished by scoring the final eight points of the second quarter to lead, 39-23, at the break.

The Aggies led by as many as 24 points in the third quarter and held their largest advantage at 29 points early in the fourth, trailing for only 15 seconds on the day and leading for all but 1:56 of game time.

UC Davis dominated the paint, 34-14, and got a huge boost from its bench, which outscored the Southern Utah starters, 39-30, for the contest. A total of 11 different Aggies made their way into the scoring column, while the team posted 26 assists on 33 makes for the game.

A three-game road trip comes to an end in the Pacific Northwest on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 26) as the Aggies travel to Seattle University for a 2 p.m. tip off against the Redhawks at the Connoly Complex.
