DAVIS, Calif. -- A 24-0 run covering parts of each half helped the UC Davis women's basketball team pull away from San Jose State on Tuesday as the Aggies posted a 95-61 non-conference victory on Hamilton Court at The Pavilion.
Junior Kelsey Harris led all players with a game- and career-high 17 points, pacing three teammates in double figures as UC Davis (1-3) earned its first victory of the season. Sophomore Alyson Doherty added her first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while junior Sydnee Fipps (14) and sophomore Lauren Beyer (10) also finished in double figures.
San Jose State, which was led by 14 points from forward Rebecca Woodberry, dropped to 4-3 overall on the year, suffering back-to-back losses for the first time in 2013-14.
A 14-0 run over a six-minute span late in the first half broke open, what was to that point, a two-point contest, but it was a larger burst of 24 consecutive points over the two periods that pushed the game out of reach.
Leading 42-30 with 1:21 remaining in the first half, the Aggies scored the final seven points of the period as Fipps hit a pair of baskets around a three-pointer by junior Brianna Salvatore, giving UC Davis a, 49-30, lead at the break.
Doherty opened the second half with an "and one" while Molly Greubel and Fipps sank back-to-back three-pointers as the Aggies opened the period with 17 unanswered points to take control. Harris capped the run with her fifth three-pointer of the game -- just two shy of the UC Davis single-game record -- to put her team up by 36 points with 16:39 to play and the Aggies never looked back.
UC Davis led by as many as 42 points in the game, but the Spartans would come no closer than 29 points at 88-59 following an 11-0 run with just 2:48 to play in the contest.
The Aggies canned 12 three-pointers in the came, led 51-45 in rebounding, and shot 47.2 percent from the floor. The 95 points were the most for UC Davis since it finished off a 102-62 win at San Jose State on Dec. 21, 2010.
It's a short turnaround for the Aggies who quickly return to the court this weekend following the Thanksgiving holiday as one of four teams at the Holiday Beach Classic hosted by Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
UC Davis opens on Friday (Nov. 29) against San Francisco before taking on Akron on Saturday (Nov. 30). Both games tip-off at 5 p.m.
NOTES: Of the 11 Aggies who saw action on Tuesday night, 10 of them finished in the scoring column… Salvatore finished 3-of-3 from the field and 2-of-2 from three-point range, having missed only three shots all season (13-for-16) and just once (7-of-8) from beyond the arc… freshman Brianne Yasukochi each scored the first points of her Aggie career Tuesday night with a three-pointer at the 13:09 mark of the second half… Fipps tied a season high with six rebounds in the first half… Doherty matched a career high with three blocked shots… in an eerie coincidence, UC Davis also opened the 2006-07 campaign with three-straight losses before posting a 34-point win (a 74-40 victory over San Francisco State) to snap its skid.
