DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis sophomore Morgan Bertsch tallied her first double-double of the season and junior Dani Nafekh reached double figures for the fifth time this year, but 19 offensive rebounds by visiting Hofstra lifted the Pride to a, 64-60, win over the Aggies on Sunday afternoon at The Pavilion.
One of a handful of remaining unbeaten teams in the nation entering the game, UC Davis suffered its first loss of the season in falling to 4-1, despite shooting 42 percent from the floor for the game and holding Hofstra to just 35 percent from the field.
Led by a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds from Ashunae Durante, the Pride improved to 4-2 overall on the season.
Bertsch hit 8-of-17 from the field and three more from the line to finish with 19 points, while grabbing a season-high 10 rebounds -- just one shy of her career high set against Florida A&M last season. She added three steaks in 33 minutes as the Santa Rosa, Calif., native has reached double figures in all five contests this season and in 13 straight dating back to last year.
Nafekh hit 5-of-8 from the field and a pair of three-pointers late in the contest to finish with 12 points to go with four rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Kourtney Eaton finished with a team-high five assists against just one turnover to go with four points.
A 12-2 burst midway through the first quarter staked the Aggies to a nine-point lead, and they led by as many as 11 points on a basket by Bertsch just 42 seconds into the second quarter for a 22-11 advantage. Holding a 10-point lead with 4:28 to play before the half, five straight points by Durant halved the UC Davis lead and Hofstra tied it on a three-pointer by Ana Hernandez Gil with just 15 seconds to play.
Junior Rachel Nagel answered on the Aggies' next trip down the court with a three-pointer of her own to give her team a, 33-30, lead at the break.
The two teams traded baskets to open the third and were tied at 40 on an "and one" by Gianotti with 5:02 to play. A turnover led to a three-pointer by Olivia Askin as the Pride scored six of the next seven to build a five-point lead with 3:03 to play, and Hofstra led by as many as five points at 49-44 before Gianotti's three to beat the third quarter buzzer to make it a two-point game.
Another three-pointer by Gianotti brought the Aggies even at 50 and UC Davis tried to inch away on another three by Nafekh to build a 54-50 advantage with 4:02 to play, but Hofstra had one last rally in it. A three-pointer by Sydni Epps and a floater by Aleana Leon regained the lead for the Pride, part of a 7-0 run that put Hofstra up 61-58 with less than a minute to play.
After trading free throws, the Aggies had a chance to tie, but missed a layup from the left side as the Pride gathered the rebound and was sent to the line. Hofstra missed both free throw attempts, leaving the door open for UC Davis, but the Durant was able to corral the loose ball and made two from the line after being fouled to ice the game.
The Pride out-rebounded the Aggies, 47-32, including a 19-10 advantage on the offensive glass leading to an 18-5 lead in second chance points.
UC Davis returns to The Pavilion to close out a three-game home stand on Friday (Dec. 2), hosting San Diego State at 7 p.m. The Aggies then hit the road to take on nationally ranked Stanford on Sunday (Dec. 4) at 2 p.m. at Maples Pavilion.
