DAVIS, Calif. - Jessica Campbell scored a season-high 21 points while Kimberly Smith added 13 as UC Davis posted a 72-46 victory over Menlo College in front of 2125 Saturday evening on Break The Record Night at the Pavilion.
With the win the Aggies improve to 2-3 on the season while the Oaks fall to 3-2.
UC Davis jumped out to a 13-3 lead in the opening five minutes and never trailed in the contest. By the midpoint of the half the Oaks had cut the lead back to five at 18-13 following an Ashlynn Dolcini jumper at the 10:23 mark. With just under five minutes left in the half the lead was three before Campbell drained one of her three three-pointers on the night to push the lead back to six. Another Campbell jumper and an Ellen Porshneva basket moved the lead back to double-digits with 1:49 remaining in the half.
Menlo entered halftime trailing by seven as it scored the final four points in the half, but it drew no closer as four different Aggies contributed to a 9-0 run opening the half to put the game away. Leading 40-24 at the 16:04 mark, the Aggies extended their lead to as much as 29 with just over three minutes to play. Kimberly Smith and Lara Gray each had 10 points in the second half as the Aggie offense found its rhythm, shooting 54 percent for the half.
"Menlo came out really prepared and attacked us in the first half," said Aggie head coach Sandy Simpson. "We weren't communicating well on defense early on but in the second half we were quicker with our rotations. Overall we played a little crisper in the second and found our rhythm on offense.
"I thought Jessica (Campbell) had her best game of the year and Christina (Perricone) came off the bench and did the things we need from her, which are rebounding and defense."
For the game Campbell had five rebounds and three assists to go with her 21 points while Smith finished with 13 and Gray 12. Jackie Turpin chipped in six points and a game-high 10 rebounds with five assists. The Aggies shot a blistering 82.4 percent from the free throw line and 40 percent from beyond the arc for the night.
Menlo was led by Maria Gomez's 10 points, six rebounds and six assists while Kepua Lee and Dolcini each added eight points. The Oaks were held to 30.2 percent shooting from the field.
Break the Record Night is the Aggies' annual attempt to set a single-season attendance record at the Pavilion. Saturday night's attendance was the 10th-highest for a women's game since the building opened in 1977.
UC Davis is next in action on Sunday when it travels to face Santa Clara at 4 p.m.
