Bertsch, Nafekh lead Aggies at #15 Oregon State

Box Score

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- UC Davis sophomore Morgan Bertsch finished with a team-high 15 points while teammate Dani Nafekh added 12 more, and the visiting Aggies shot 46 percent in the fourth quarter before falling at No. 15 Oregon State, 93-52, on Wednesday morning in front of 5,168 fans at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore.

UC Davis fell to 6-3 overall with the defeat, shooting just 31 percent from the field for the game, but rebounded to hit 6-of-13 from the floor in the final period to try and close the gap. Led by Sydney Wiese's triple-double of 27 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists -- the fourth in the history of the Oregon State program -- the Beavers improved to 7-1 on the year.

Bertsch finished 6-of-16 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the line en route to her team-high total, finishing in double figures for the ninth time in nine opportunities this season and 17 straight overall dating back to the end of last season. She shared team-high honors in rebounding with teammate Marly Anderson with five apiece and added a pair of blocks to bring her team-high total to 17.

Nafekh finished 4-of-10 from the field -- including a pair from beyond the arc -- while adding three assists, while freshman Nina Bessolo narrowly missed out on double figures, finishing with nine second-half points to go with four rebounds off the bench.

Oregon State was out quickly to ignite the mostly-full Gill Coliseum crowd full of area school children as part of the "Beavers Beyond the Classroom" day, opening the game on a 15-0 run before Bertsch hit a jumper to snap the skid and get the Aggies on the board. A three by Pele Gianotti and another basket inside by Bertsch got their team back to within 10 -- a deficit UC Davis would come within three more times in the first half -- but the Aggies would not be able to find the basket that would put them over the top and make it a single-digit contest.

A jumper by Kourtney Eaton and two free throws by Bertsch with two minutes gone in the second quarter made it a, 25-15, contest, but another lengthy run -- this one a 12-0 bust over a three minute span midway through the period -- put the Beavers up, 37-15, and they were off to the races, building a 44-22 advantage at the break.

The Aggies were held to just 21 percent from the floor in the third quarter as Oregon State extended its lead, hitting 56 percent overall and hitting 4-of-5 from distance in the period, but UC Davis opened the fourth by scoring five of the first six points to force a Beavers timeout, getting a basket inside by Bertsch after a turnover and a three-pointer by Nafekh to get within 73-40 in the opening minute.

That would be as close as the Aggies would get, however, as Oregon State drained a trio of three-pointers on its next three possessions to power and 11-2 burst and the Beavers cruised from there.

UC Davis remains on the road for game two of their six-game road trip, returning to action on Sunday (Dec. 18) at 2 p.m., and making the short trip across the Causeway to take on rival Sacramento State at The Nest.
