THE SERIES WITH CAL POLY: : UC Davis leads the all-time series 17-12 and has won the past three games... The teams began playing during the 1979-80 season and stopped for nearly 10 years before resuming their series in 2003-04... UC Davis won 73-59 last season at Cal Poly before returning to The Pavilion for a 70-63 win.

THE SERIES WITH UC SANTA BARBARA: : UC Santa Barbara holds a 6-2 all-time advantage over UC Davis, including having won two of the past three games since the teams resumed playing their series in 2004-05... The Aggies, however, have won the most recent matchup, a 64-56 win on Hamilton Court last year.

A QUICK LOOK AT THE MUSTANGS: : Cal Poly jumped out to a 3-2 start to the season but is 2-7 since that point... The Mustangs are coming off a 61-50 win over Long Beach State on Saturday which snapped a seven-game losing streak... All-Big West pick JESSICA EGGLESTON has paced the Mustangs throughout the season, having led them in scoring in 11 of 15 games... She is averaging a team-high 13.1 ppg and 7.5 rpg having also contributed 37 total assists, second most on the squad... She is shooting 44 percent from the field and has scored in double figures for eight straight games... MEGAN HARRISON is averaging 8.4 ppg., next best on the projected starting five... Cal Poly has been playing with returning PG SPARKLE ANDERSON, who was averaging 8.3 ppg before being sidelined for the season with a knee injury... The Mustangs are averaging 65.3 ppg and giving up 68.5... Head coach FAITH MIMNAUGH has 99 career wins at Cal Poly and is one shy of becoming the program's all-time winningest coach.

A QUICK LOOK AT THE GAUCHOS: : UCSB has been the dominant Big West Conference team over the past, having claimed at least a share of the last 11 regular-season league titles... The Gauchos are 3-1 during the early part of this conference season, having won their past three after an opening-game defeat at UC Riverside (L,57-70), last year's BWC Tournament champion... JENNA GREEN is averaging 16.5 ppg and 7.7 rpg to pace UCSB while JESSICA WILSON is at 13.3 ppg and 5.7 rpg... JORDAN FRANEY (9.1) and newcomer CHISA ONONIWU (9.0), who has played in just six games, are close behind... The Gauchos are averaging 64.9 ppg. and allowing 70.6 ppg, totals that have been affected by a tough schedule that has included No. 1 Maryland (L,44-105)... Franey has a team-high 23 three-pointers for head coach MARK FRENCH, who recently won his 500th career game.

UC DAVIS ENJOYED SUCCESS AGAINST THE BIG WEST LAST SEASON: : UC Davis is not an official member of the Big West until 2007-08 but the Aggies played their first full schedule against future league foes last season last year, going 11-5 against BWC teams... That record would've tied the Aggies for the regular-season Big West title with LBSU and UC Santa Barbara... The Aggies beat every team in the conference last year and had a nine-game winning streak against BWC teams during the latter portion of the season with five of the wins coming on the road... It was ended by Long Beach State on Feb. 25 at The Pyramid, 78-62... So far this season the Aggies are 1-1 against BWC teams.

DIVISION I INDEPENDENT UPDATE: : UC Davis and 10 other schools comprise the Division I Independents, a grouping of programs not members of any conference (UC Davis joins the Big West next season)... The institutions have joined together to form an alliance that provides statistical leaders and player awards... Heather Bates (9th, 11.6), Haylee Donaghe (11th, 11.1) and Laura Thomas (14th, 10.3) are all ranked among the scoring leaders... Bates is also No.4 in rebounding (6.9) and No. 6 in field goal pct. (.434)... Thomas is No. 6 in free throw pct. (.818) and No. 5 in 3-pt pct. (.398) while Donaghe is No. 8 in field goal pct. (.409) and No. 4 in steals (2.21)... Freshman Anna Harp (.787) is No. 8 in free throw pct... UC Davis's highest team rankings are No.2 positions in free throw pct. (.710) and steals (10.5)... The Aggies have not had a Player of the Week or Newcomer of teh Week honoree yet this season and are in "5th place" in the Div. I Independent standings... Other schools included (with current record in parentheses) are South Dakota State (11-5), Utah Valley State (10-6), Indiana-Purdue-Ft. Wayne (7-7), North Dakota State (6-6), Savannah State (6-10), Texas-Pan American (6-11), Chicago State (5-12), Longwood (5-12), New Jersey Tech (3-11) and Winston-Salem State (4-15).

NCAA STATISTICAL UPDATES: : UC Davis is not currently eligible to be ranked in any NCAA Div. I statistical category but is listed with any other reclassifying school at the bottom of any stat where they would be if they had been eligible... The Aggies, who would've led Div. I in free throw pct. last season had they been eligible, are not listed this week in any category.

AGGIES ON RECORD PACE FROM LONG DISTANCE: : The Aggies made 166 three-pointers last season, just two off the school record of 168 set during the 2004-05 campaign, and are well on their way to breaking that mark this season... Through 15 games, UC Davis has canned 88 treys and is averaging 5.9 made per game, despite making just five total treys on last weekend's road trip to southern California... The current pace would give them 171 for the season... The Aggies have already twice tied the school record for most three-pointers in a game when they made 11 against San Francsico State on Nov. 20 and Dec. 8 vs. Boise State... They are also well on their way to breaking the school record for attempts after averaging 17.8 so far... If they keep it up, they will try 516 this season, smashing the previous best of 452, set last season... G Laura Thomas has twice made a team-high five three-pointers, both coming in the team's school-record tying performances against SFSU and BSU. :

INJURY BUG TAKING ITS BITE OUT OF AGGIES: UC Davis has been affected by three significant injuries so far this season; one of them coming in the preseason when P Ellen Porshneva was sidelined for the year with a knee injury... The misfortuned continued in the season's second game when talented freshman P Paige Mintun went down for the year with a foot injury... The most recent injury came to W Haylee Donaghe, who missed most of last season with injury... Donaghe, who was averaging 11.1 ppg per game, suffered a hand injury against UC Irvine and is expected to miss several games.

HARP HELPING AGGIES DURING FRESHMAN SEASON: : Freshman Anna Harp is playing a significant role in UC Davis' attack this season, averaging 6.4 ppg during her inaugural season... She has scored a season-high 13 points against both Syracuse and Lafayette, tallied 12 versus rival Sacramento State and had 11 at UC Irvine... UC Davis is 3-1 in games in which she scores in double figures... Additionally, she had a early career-high 10 free throws against Sacramento State... Harp is also shooting .787 from the line, second best on the team and is fourth on the squad with 2.14 assists per game.

AGGIES NAILS FROM THE FREE THROW LINE IN 2005-06: : It should've probably been obvious after the opening game last year against Radford that UC Davis was going to have a special year from the free throw line... The Aggies made 21 of 22 (.955) of their charity stripe attempts that game, then followed with a 10-of-11 effort at Cal on their way to making .885 of their tries over the first five games... That set the stage for UC Davis posting the best mark in the Division I stat rankings every reporting period during the season until the final report of the regular season... However, the Aggies finished at a school-record .796 which was good enough to make them No. 1 nationally when the national championships concluded... UC Davis is not eligible to be officially ranked in the stats because of their reclassification status.

THOMAS ENJOYING BREAKOUT YEAR: : Senior G Laura Thomas entered this season having scored in double figures five times in her previous three seasons combined and with a career scoring average of 3.3 ppg... She had, however, always shown a skill from three-point territory having made 54 in her career... Thomas' senior campaign has gotten off to a great start... She's averaging a 10.3 ppg - third-best on the team - leads the team in three-pointers made (33) and pct. (.398), has scored in double-figures 10 times and has made at least two three-pointers in 10 games... Additionally, she's canned a career-best five in two matchups (S.F. State, Boise St.) and is shooting 83 percent from the line, best on the team.

UC DAVIS SIGNS TWO DURING EARLY SIGNING PERIOD: : The Aggies had a busy recruiting period, signing three outstanding student-athletes during November's National Letter of Intent early signing period... Joining UC Davis will be 6-foot-2 post Lauren Juric from Bear River High School in Grass Valley, 5-11 wing Samantha Meggison from El Modena High School in Orange, and 6-foot-2 post Lisa Peterson from El Camino High School in Sacramento. :

LAST TIME OUT: MEGAN VOGEL scored a game-high 21 points last Friday night and South Dakota State used a decisive 12-2 run just after the midway point of the second half as the Jackrabbits pulled away from UC Davis in a 78-61 nonconference women's basketball win at The Pavilion... UC Davis didn't score a basket and missed their first 11 tries of the game before scoring with 11:15 left in the first half... However, the Jackrabbits - who had early beat then nationally ranked USC - were only up 7-0. The Aggies made their next nine shots and eventually led 31-28 at halftime... SDSU then used a 12-2 run to break open a tight 54-51 game midway through the second half on its way to the win... Heather Bates scored 15 points to lead UC Davis while freshman Ashley Curry had a career-high 10 points and five rebounds.

SIMPSON SURPASSES GILL-FISHER FOR NO. 2 SPOT ON COACHING LIST: : HEAD COACH Sandy Simpson took over the No. 2 position on the program's all-time coaching list with the Aggies' 72-63 win over Brown on Dec. 2.. He had tied for the spot when the Aggies beat San Francisco State on Nov. 20, 74-40... He's now ahead of mentor and current Senior Associate Athletics Director PAM GILL-FISHER with 168 career wins... Ironically, it was Gill-Fisher who gave Simpson his first coaching job as an assistant in 1977.. Simpson is 169-95 all-time and in his 10th season for the Aggies, while Gill-Fisher had a 10-year record of 164-129 that covered the years 1975-88 (she did not coach 1980-81 and 1986-87)... JORJA HOEHN (205-51, 1998-96, `97-98), a current member of the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame, is the all-time leader.

DIVISION I OR DIVISION II? A LESSON IN RECLASSIFICATION: : UC Davis is in its fourth and final year of a four-year reclassification to NCAA Division I status... Officially, UC Davis (like all other institutions currently reclassifying) is a Div. II institution until its first active year of Div. I (for UC Davis, that's in 2007-08)... However, the university was required to follow all NCAA Div. I rules and regulations, including those governing scheduling, beginning in 2004-05... Similarly, UC Davis began counting two years ago as a Div. I team for its opponents' strength-of-schedule purposes, started to be included in Div. I stats, and has been added to most media coverage of Div. I athletics, primarily because of its competition... UC Davis will become official members of the Big West Conference in 2007-08 but has been fully integrated into regular-season scheduling in all its member sports, including men's basketball.
